Career Insights

Leslie A. StafanickLeslie A. Stafanick, Financial Representative
Leslie Stafanick has been a financial representative since 1985.

I was an Associate Agent for 11 years with the Network before becoming a Financial Representative. Prior to that, I worked for various brokerage firms. I decided on this career by accident through an employment agency and then it chose and consumed me. I can't think of anything else more satisfying and rewarding then to be a Financial Representative. The greatest reward is seeing the impact I can have on my clients’ lives. What I appreciate most is having the backing of Northwestern Mutual that truly cares about its policy holders and Financial Representatives.

The most challenging part is keeping up with the never-ending need for continuing education and the advancing technology. Early on, the greatest challenge is balancing family and business, learning to be a business owner and the demanding need to be organized. But along the way, I have gained a lot of confidence in myself and realized that my clients really need and appreciate our products and my services.

Key Milestones
In my first year as a Financial Representative, I qualified for Million Dollar Round Table and have qualified every year since. I qualified for the bronze, silver and gold awards. I was Rookie of the Year in my network office, which was such an honor. I also was the leading female representative nationwide twice and qualified for Forum twice.

Career Advice
Don't get into the business unless you are going to give it your best effort. It takes a lot of work, but the rewards are all well worth it. Have a good support system and don't try to reinvent the wheel. Systems are in place to ensure your success if you only follow the system. Our company is distinguished by its mission statement and the commitment to its policy holders, and the interaction between the home office and the field force and the willingness of the home office to help the field force in any way they possibly can.

If a person chooses a career in sales and one’s income is dependent solely on the success of sales activity, then I feel it is most important to make sure that the product being sold is the best in the marketplace and that the training to sell that product is the best available.

I feel confident that Northwestern Mutual's product line is superior to any in the industry. This, in my mind, eliminates the competition. The rest is based on sales ability and I feel that I have received and continue to receive the best training from my Managing Partner, my fellow Financial Representatives, not only in my office, but from around the country, and most importantly, support from the corporate home office and support staff. Our home office and field force work together as a team.

Gordon GruenesGordon P Gruenes, CLU, ChFC, CSA, Financial Representative
Gordon Gruenes has been a financial representative since 1990.

Before becoming a Financial Representative, I worked in the finance department of a hospital as the Director of Accounting. I was looking for a career change and was open to many ideas. I did not have a clear idea of where I wanted to go, but I did have a clear idea of where I didn’t want to go, and it seemed as if my career at that time was taking me in a direction that was not attractive. The biggest reward of being a Financial Representative is the personal freedom to make choices almost every day. Being in my sixteenth year, I appreciate this now much more than even five years ago.

Overcoming the Challenges
The career has its challenges, too. The fact that even though my client base provides a great deal of business, unless I keep meeting, and establishing new relationships, my business stays stagnant or even shrinks. This to me is very evident each January, when I look at an empty client builder for the year.

Early in my career, it was challenging to keep a long-term perspective to building a practice, while still trying to have some tangible short-term results. It was also challenging to have some professional fun, because it seemed very hard at the time. But I have learned much in the way of self analysis and evaluation.

My Career Advice
Come into this business with a very strong financial base. Don’t act like you are self employed until you actually have a business with a client base, and try and celebrate as many of the small steps along the way as you can.

Looking back, it seemed really hard to start, but if you put a high value on your own personal time, you should be able to have many more professional choices regarding your time, than most other professions or careers. For me, that was very important.

The individual integrity of each Financial Representative differentiates our company from the others in the financial services business. I hear the words thank you from time to time; this feedback is important and reminds me of the value that we bring to our clients.

Internships
Whether you know where your college education is taking you or you _ re still keeping your options open, you owe it to yourself to see if Northwestern Mutual Financial Network's Internship program with The McTigue Financial Group is right for you.

As you learn by doing, you'll find that the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network Internship Program is an intense and according to our alumni -- unparalleled learning experience. Expect the process to be rewarding, educational and an opportunity for you to narrow your career search.

Our internships provide a great chance for students to combine what they've learned in the classroom with a real-life look into what they could truly make of themselves. You'll have the chance to work in a real-world business environment and earn performance-based compensation.

The ambition of the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network Internship program has been less to sell our financial products than to develop people. As a Financial Representative College Intern, you will enjoy the benefit of working with The McTigue Financial Group where you'll receive outstanding guidance, superior support and quality expertise.

As full-time college students, interns generally work 15 to 20 hours per week developing business- and client-building skills. In most ways, our interns follow the same process for establishing their careers as our Financial Representatives.

Our internship offers you invaluable business experience that you will take with you far into your career. But that's just the start of the impact this can have on your future and your present.

Consider these benefits:

  • Practical guidance in your career selection process
  • The chance to develop your networking and business relationship skills
  • Flexible work schedule
  • Securities license, state licenses for life, health and accident insurance opportunities and a head start program for a career as a full-time Financial Representative
  • Compensation in the same manner as a full-time Financial Representative.
  • Actual business experience for your resume.
  • Test drive the Financial Representative career.

Regardless of what you do after graduation, you'll have a foundation of skills and knowledge to build your career upon. One out of three former interns becomes a full-time Financial Representative upon graduation. These graduates have built a solid foundation for immediate and future career success.

The two-thirds who choose other career paths benefit as well. They launch their career with stronger business-building skills and a clearer sense of where they want their career to take them.

After completing the internship, the knowledge you have gained, coupled with the opportunity to work for The McTigue Financial Group as a full-time Financial Representative, can lead you to a profitable and fulfilling future.
