Position Summary
The physical therapist is responsible for evaluation, planning and implementation of treatment with a variety of physical disabilities as prescribed by the referring physician and in compliance with the criteria set forth by the standards of Rochelle Community Hospital and the State of Illinois.  Administers and directs administration of physical agents utilized in physical medicine and rehabilitation.  The physical therapist is responsible to the Manager of Physical Therapy.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides treatment to out-patients, medical-surgical patients, emergency department and same day surgery patients to enhance their physical, emotional, cognitive, visual-motor, and/or self-care abilities.

  • Notes physician’s diagnosis and specific treatment recommended.  Consults with physicians to clarify any treatment recommendations, advice regarding any indications or contraindications, modify treatment based on the patient’s best interest.

  • Evaluates, plans and implements treatment programs to enhance the patient’s physical, emotional, cognitive, visual-motor, and/or self-care skills.

  • Administers standardized testing procedures in approved and recommended fashion as well as informal testing to evaluate patient’s status and progress.

  • Selects treatment procedures and modalities suited to the individual’s physical capability, intelligence level, and interest in order to achieve the highest level of independence.

  • Educates patient and family in the purpose and goals of treatment in an effective and professional manner.

  • Evaluates treatment progress.

  • Directs activities of physical therapy assistants, aides and students as activity relates to therapist’s specific patients.

  • Documents evaluations, daily notes, progress notes and discharge summaries and records pertinent to the patient as established by departmental and hospital policy, within the recommended time frames.

  • Maintains clean, safe working environment to facilitate quality of patient care.

  • Assumes responsibility of supervisor in the absence of the Director.

Advises in decisions regarding:

  • Policy and Procedure

  • Quality Improvement

  • Scope of Care

  • APTA regulations regarding treatment procedures, professional ethics and standards of care

  • Status of Equipment

  • Problem Solving

  • Therapist and Patient Scheduling

  • Develops new programs as supervised by the Director

  • Liaison between Director and other direct care provider staff, who encourages communication between staff members, medical staff, and other hospital staff.

  • Orients and trains new personnel to the department.

  • Instructs departmental staff and other hospital staff members through in-service presentations on topics pertinent to physical therapy expertise.

  • Increases knowledge base to further enhance patient treatment skills.

  • Attends continuing education programs as approved by the Director of Physical Therapy to ensure that treatment procedures are current with evidence based practice.

  • Coordinates and instructs departmental or hospital wide in-services or educational programs.

  • Maintains current and new developments in physical medicine by survey of literature and attendance at professional meetings and conferences.

  • Becomes familiar with hospital policies, employee manual, and other hospital procedures.

  • Maintains mandatory educational requirements based on JCAHO, IDPH, and OSHA standards.

  • Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing, following, and enforcing standards and procedures and complying with legal regulations.

  • Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock, placing orders, and verifying receipt.

  • Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and calling for repairs.

  • Maintain required training and/or education per hospital guidelines.

  • Follow and maintain all lawful safety, health requirements and regulations, and follow protocols for required protective equipment for peers, patients and community.

  • Promptly report safety issues such hazardous conditions, job-related injury or illness, and seek guidance or treatment.

  • Adheres to all professional standards, policies and procedures, federal/state/local requirements and regulatory organizations.

  • Maintains strict confidentiality of patient and records.

  • Portrays a professional and positive attitude for peers, patients and community.

  • Other duties as assigned


Education

  • B.S. degree and certificate in Physical Therapy from an accredited institution.

  • Licensed to practice Physical Therapy in the State of Illinois.

  • Member or eligible for membership, in the American Physical Therapy Association.

  • CPR certification.


Work Environment/Physical Demands

    • The theory of physical medicine

    • Human anatomy and physiology

    • The disease process of the body to carry out the values of physical therapy agents.

  • Ability to handle a variety of duties which may be interrupted or changed by immediate circumstances.

  • Constant kneeling, stooping, bending, twisting and occasional need to lift patients

  • Medium Lifting, generally lifting not more than 50 lbs maximum with assistance, with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 lbs
