Title: Program Assistant, Science Career Continuum

Exemption Status: Non-exempt

Department: Youth Education

Reports to: Manager of Science Career Continuum

Seasonal Full-time, June to August 2024

Supervises: Students in the Science Career Continuum

Position Overview:

The Science Career Continuum seeks two alumni interns to support our 7-week summer programs (June to August, Monday through Friday) for middle and high school students (grades 6 to 12). Gain hands-on experience in program management by assisting with attendance tracking, field trip coordination, classroom activities, and ensuring student safety during bus rides. This internship offers valuable skills development and contributes to a rewarding summer experience. Applications closed to non-alumni.

Responsibilities:

In this role, you will be responsible for the following:

Support student well-being and program logistics:

  • Ensure student safety and adherence to guidelines during bus rides.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records and report any concerns to the program manager.
  • Supervise Science First students during learning activities, fostering engagement and adherence to expectations.

Enhance program operations and learning:

  • Organize and manage student assignments in Google Classroom.
  • Stay up to date on the program calendar and prepare necessary materials.
  • Print and set up classroom activities for Science First and College First programs.

Contribute to a seamless field trip experience:

  • Assist with coordinating maps, directions, and tickets for field trips.
  • Work alongside the program manager and instructors on various logistical tasks.

Qualifications

Our ideal candidate will have the following:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Leadership experience: Minimum of one year demonstrating leadership skills in informal science education settings, such as camps, after-school programs, or science clubs.
  • Program familiarity: Strong familiarity with the Chicago Botanic Garden's Science First and/or College First programs through prior participation is a significant advantage. Non-alumni are not being considered at this time.

Physical Demands:

Office setting. Frequent sitting, standing, walking, bending, listening, speaking, and keyboarding. Use of office equipment including computers, telephones, copiers, scanners, and fax machines. Some requirements for lifting, pushing, or pulling items less than 30 pounds.
