Mock Trial Sponsor Job Description

Position Title: Mock Trial Sponsor

Reports To: Director of Social Studies

Purpose Statement: Along with the co-sponsor, the Mock Trial Sponsor will supervise all students who
are participating on the Mock Trial team. The position includes supervising an overnight trip to
Champaign, IL for the state competition, attending several local tournaments, and hosting two
tournaments at Niles West High School. The Mock Trial Sponsor is responsible for organizing fund-
raisers throughout the year to help offset students' costs for the state tournament.

Essential Functions:
* Facilitates students understanding of witness statements and the legal system in order to present
both the plaintiff and defense sides in a court of law.
* Supervises students during practices and competitions.
* Schedules activities for the purpose of making necessary arrangements for practices and
competitions.
* Assists in the selection process for the Varsity and Junior Varsity Mock Trial teams.
* Organizes and executes fundraisers according D219 policies and procedures.
* Engages students in community service activities.
* Organizes, promotes, and hosts tournaments.
* Maintains positive relationships with local judges, attorneys and other school coaches to build a
Mock Trial culture.
* Maintains a variety of documents including attendance records to club meetings and overnight
field trip paperwork.
* Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient functioning of
the club.

Goals of the Club
* Promotes greater understanding of and appreciation for the law, court procedures, and the
American judicial system.
* Develops students' life skills, such as critical thinking, reading, speaking, and advocacy.
* Heightens students' appreciation for the principle of equal justice for all.
* Promotes students' awareness of current legal issues.
* Promotes the exchange of ideas among students.

Calendar: August through March:
Weekly meetings on Tuesday and Thursday from 3:30 pm to 5:00 pm
The competition events are (dates TBD):
* Local Scrimmage with Maine West
* Skokie Courthouse
* Rolling Meadows Courthouse
* DuPage Courthouse
* State competition in Champaign, Illinois at University of Illinois.

Hours Per Week: 3 hours per week in meetings, plus competitions and planning
