Description:

Under the supervision of the Senior Instructional Designer, the Instructional Development Specialist collaborates with content experts and colleagues to develop educational initiatives (e.g. online and asynchronous courses, credit and noncredit courses, certificates and degree programs) for the unit's primary audiences. This includes defining scope of work for each project, preparing a project plan, drafting a timeline, implementing the development plan and creating instructional resources, as needed. Additionally, the Instructional Development Specialist will provide consultation services as well as assist with online program orientations.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Utilize market research to guide development of instruction for high job growth occupations and online initiatives that meet the unit's mission. Design courses and training programs using appropriate learning principles and interactive e-learning models as appropriate. Develop processes, program standards, and templates for the creation of learning programs and new online learning initiatives. Establish and maintain partnerships with external organizations to create a pipeline for curriculum resources that can be integrated into the programs created. Assist with program evaluation to ensure quality of the program.
  • Collaborate with content experts to identify learning needs, objectives and appropriate instructional methodologies to create high-quality, interactive courses. Update and redesign existing courses and training programs to meet target audiences' needs as identified by the content experts, learning analytics, and workforce needs. Revise instructional materials according to identified design changes. Communicate with project stakeholders to ensure project scope, goals and objectives are being met. Ensure the instructional integrity of development projects through systematic design ad clear scripts, narrative and storyboards.
  • Maintain curriculum quality through the creation of original learning materials, design of course activities, utilization of course management tools, and review of academic and professional literature for pertinent content. Utilize instructional design software to create a variety of materials, including media (e.g. digital visual aids) to support learning. Stay abreast of changes to UIC's course management system and servers, which may impact the delivery of online programs. Design plans to minimize impact and communicate these to all stakeholders. Plan and devise the layout of text, photos, illustrations and other media for courses and training programs.
  • Support the coordination of quality assurance processes to meet the highest standards of quality within course sites, instructional materials and other instructional documentation. Coordinate response to student concerns and establish protocols for technical support staff to ensure high-touch student support. Oversee graduate students providing technical support to current students and instructors in online programs. Troubleshoot escalated technical problems. Establish rapport with staff across units on campus, as appropriate, to facilitate the support of online programs. Train unit staff, adjunct instructors, and potential partners on course review to evaluate the design of online learning initiatives. Provide training and development for adjunct instructors. Represent the unit at campus meetings and external community events; facilitate and conduct presentations as needed. Conduct online new student orientations with the Academic Advisor to provide an overview of course sites.


  • Minimum Qualifications Required:

    1. A. Master's degree in education, educational psychology, or the humanities such as history, political science, literature, journalism, communications, or philosophy
    AND
    Six (6) months of experience which included any of the following areas professional writing or editing, audiovisual design and/or production, design and/or production of evaluation tools, educational programming, curriculum development, or classroom teaching
    OR
    B. Baccalaureate degree in education, educational psychology, or the humanities
    AND
    Eighteen (18) months of experience which included any of the following areas professional writing or editing, audiovisual design and/or production, design and/or production of evaluation tools, educational programming, curriculum development, or classroom teaching

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Minimum of three (3) years of work experience in the field of instructional design and direct work experience in developing effective learning resources.
