This position contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by presenting educational programs to various groups, assisting with the development of classes and programs, and providing a safe, fun, and educational class experience. By exercising these functions, this position advances the CZS mission while supporting the four pillars, especially Innovations in Education and Extraordinary Guest Experiences.
Responsibilities:
Program facilitation and preparation - Sets-up, teaches and takes down Connections programs in assigned classrooms and other in-zoo sites, for students in preschool through high school. Participates in other Education Department programs, such as assisting with teacher workshops. Program development - Contributes to the research, development, implementation and writing of new programs, and in the maintenance of existing programs. Maintenance of supplies, equipment, and materials - Assists in the maintenance of supplies, equipment and materials needed to deliver programs. Other responsibilities - Assists with clerical and secretarial duties related to school programs. Participates in other department activities and duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s Degree in education, life and environmental science or equivalent combination of related training and experience required. Minimum 1 year experience teaching in either a classroom or informal education setting. Experience working with a variety of ages and group sizes, and teaches a range of class styles. Good oral and communication skills. Basic computer skills required, word processing skills desired. Able to work cooperatively with staff and volunteers. Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends, evenings and holidays. Experience in a zoo, aquarium, museum, nature center, art studio environment, or early childhood classroom preferred. Interest and passion for conservation, biological diversity, and the natural world. A genuine interest in learning and innovative approaches to education. Must be willing to work in outdoor and indoor work settings in a variety of weather conditions. Excellent customer service skills and/or demonstrated ability to work with the public effectively. Ability to work cooperatively with staff and volunteers. Good oral and written communication skills. Must represent the Society in a courteous, professional manner at all times. Valid driver’s license required for Illinois residents within 90 days of hire; valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents. Fluency in Spanish or other foreign language desirable.
