This position contributes to the success of the Chicago Zoological Society by creating, illustrating, and producing marketing communications and in-park signs under minimal supervision to educate the public about animals and conservation, to raise funds, to share the results of research, to enhance the experience of guests of the zoo and to drive attendance.
Responsibilities:
Designs printed materials, advertising, signs, and other graphics to meet criteria established by clients and supervisor to educate our guests about the natural world and to increase attendance. Illustrates printed materials, signs, and other graphics to meet criteria established by clients and supervisor in a variety of styles and media. Assists other Senior Designers in layout, production, research, and production of signage programs and printed materials or campaigns. Provides leadership to and supervision of seasonal, if applicable, including but not limited to job assignments, sketch reviews, and performance evaluations and recognition. Participates in the Interpretation Maintenance program to ensure that signage standards are met in all visitor areas. Conduct monthly walk through of all assigned buildings and produce replacement signage as needed. Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Design or other relevant field or equivalent combination of training and/or experience required. Experience with consumer advertising and web design is preferred. Minimum of 5 years comparable design experience required. Experience in a Graphic Arts/Design department with a non-profit organization or advertising agency is preferred. Strong computer background and proficiency required. Experience with Macintosh platform and Adobe CS2 Suite required. Solid verbal and written communications skills and strong organizational skills required. Must have good decision-making and problem-solving skills and the ability to effectively manage time, prioritize tasks, and juggle a heavy workload. Must possess strong creative and conceptual skills, and demonstrate a full understanding of the creative development process. Ability to work independently and in team settings. Must be able to take art direction. Strong attention to detail. Must be able to maintain the confidentiality of privileged information. Must possess strong interpersonal and communication skills, including verbal, written, and listening. Must represent the Society in a professional, courteous manner at all times. Valid driver’s license required for Illinois residents within 90 days of hire; valid out-of-state license required for out-of-state residents. Spanish fluency a plus, but not required.
