Developmental English faculty

Located seventeen miles from downtown Chicago, Oakton serves northern Cook County with campuses in Des Plaines and Skokie.

Oakton Community College, a caring community of educators dedicated to excellence in teaching and learning, seeks faculty with expertise in English -- developmental reading and developmental writing to join our College.

Applicants must be strong communicators and effective classroom facilitators who enjoy teaching in a student-centered environment.

One full time, tenure track faculty position is available, beginning on August 16, 2010.

Applicants should be current in their use of evolving technologies, active in promoting critical thinking, and committed to challenging our students to be knowledgeable, ethical, and capable global citizens.

Oakton is seeking enthusiastic faculty who are committed to innovation in college-level teaching and learning, and interested in non-traditional delivery of instruction.

Oakton faculty are expected to engage in professional development activities, and institutional and departmental service.

Prior undergraduate teaching experience is preferred.

A master’s degree in English or a related field such as Developmental Education, Rhetoric and Composition, or Reading, and prior college teaching experience in developmental reading and/or developmental writing are required.

Preferred qualifications include:

Graduate course work in developmental reading and/or developmental writing,

Two years of experience teaching developmental reading and/or developmental writing in a community college,

Knowledge of current research on the success of underprepared students.

The successful candidate will teach courses to students who place below college level reading and writing on Oakton’s reading and writing placement tests.

The hiring range is from $41,785-$62,057 for a 9 month contract. Additional salary can be earned through overloads and summer assignments.
