Have you ever wished you had a crystal ball to help you see into the future? There are two reports regarding the global executive outlook for 2014 (Executive Search Industry Global Outlook Report and BlueSteps Global Executive Outlook) that are the next best thing.

These reports cover the executive search industry outlook, business performance, senior talent shortage, and more. Some of the findings include:

Retained search consultants are more optimistic than they have been since mid-2011. Hiring plans are likely to be affected by this positive outlook, along with increased annual revenues.

Peter Felix, AESC President, comments: “The results of our Outlook survey are most encouraging and indicate that, in spite of continuing volatility in some regions and sectors, nevertheless there is real evidence of organizations thinking more strategically and looking ahead with a positive mindset. Senior management appointments are one of the key focal points…”

We have seen a shift in the willingness and ability of executives to be more mobile. The two factors that executives consider the most significant to lure them away from their current job are opportunities for a better role and increased responsibility, along with increased total compensation.

The predictions for the sectors with the most growth in the first half of 2014 are manufacturing (35%), energy/natural resources (32%), and healthcare/life sciences (30%). However, the anticipated talent shortage will be in technology/telecom, healthcare/life sciences and energy/natural resources.

Top markets expected to experience a talent shortage in 2014 are China, Brazil, and Africa with the U.S. right behind. The biggest shortages of talent will be noticeable in the areas of general management and C-level executives such as CEO/COO, as well as business development and board of directors.

More from Peter Felix: “Globalization, digital transformation, and industry restructuring are amongst those strategic forces that are changing the corporate landscape and are presenting new challenges on a continuing basis. Combined with an increasingly mobile executive market with executives anxious to find new opportunities after five years of moribund compensation growth and cost-cutting pressures it is likely that a new phase in the War for Talent will now develop.”
