Job Summary:


Generac Power Systems - Work with the leader in the power industry! Our corporate headquarters in Waukesha, WI has a new opportunity available for a Design Researcher.

The Design Researcher will manage global design research for all Generac brands. This role will bring focus and process to Generac's current design research, manage research programs and create impactful presentations to show findings to Generac's internal teams. The Design Researcher frames insights and user needs from multiple streams of research to create and inspire new concepts and products that excite and impress our customers. This role will synthesize these insights and craft compelling and thought-provoking narratives and reports that will educate, uncover opportunities and threats and provide actionable insights for the business. The Design Researcher will also investigate new ideas and opportunities constantly to identify the most important themes, cultural shifts, consumer/ business and category trends to drive product innovation, best in class consumer experiences and expansion into new markets. The Design Researcher will build and maintain a network of product experts who we can depend on to test new products and ideas.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Designs questionnaires and discussion guides; manages, implements and analyzes the results of research studies; and presents and packages research information in a timely fashion in usable formats internally and using external partners. Directs primary qualitative research (qualitative is defined as all methodologies including facilitation, one on ones, ethnographers, focus groups, co-creation, managing outside vendors etc.). Designs and conducts user research using qualitative and quantitative methods, including, but not limited to, discovery research, rapid and iterative concept and usability testing, participatory design, ethnography, contextual inquiry, surveys. Cultivates group of local users for testing new products and ideas.
  • Builds and delivers presentations that summarize complex qualitative and quantitative data to diverse audiences in an understandable format.
  • Collaborates with quantitative research, design and engineering teams to design products and further our understanding of users. Ideates and evaluates insights that lead to new ideas and customer value. Works collaboratively to identify business questions and research needs throughout the product development process, from concept phase to post-launch.
  • Keeps abreast of trends in our industries to help form a lens for our consumer research. Actively monitors and analyzes research, data, and trends from internal sources, academic research, and industry published reports to inform and improve our research methods.
  • Serves as the enterprise subject matter expert on best methodologies for ethnography. Serves as lead on acquiring and disseminating experiential trend information to raise the knowledge base of the entire organization.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Physical demands:


Minimal Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Social Science, Behavioral Science Psychology, Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Cognitive Psychology, Anthropology, Industrial Design or related degree, or equivalent experience
  • 5 years of research and design work experience, with strong theoretical and practical knowledge of both qualitative (e.g., ethnography) and quantitative (e.g., data analytics) research methodologies
  • 2 years of experience researching and supporting the design of physical products, utilizing a variety of qualitative research methods, and in gaining active end-user involvement in the specification/design of products
  • 1 years of experience in moderating/conducting focus groups and one-on-one interviews

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's Degree in Social Science, Behavioral Science Psychology, Human-Computer Interaction, Human Factors, Cognitive Psychology, Anthropology, or related degree
  • Experience working with industrial design teams and product management teams

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Ability to leverage tools and quantitative techniques to measure success, present opportunities, and support decision-making and prioritization.
  • Skilled in uncovering insights that lead to successful products.
  • Innovative thinker with ability to manage ambiguity, work autonomously, manage multiple and varied projects concurrently and solve problems.
  • Expert interpersonal skills. Ability to communicate with, and persuade, varied audiences and argue for results (both orally and in writing) is a plus. Able to sell, support, explain, and simply present research methodology and research findings to various audience types from sophisticated design experts to non-designers.
  • Strong oral, written, and visual communication skills and can present findings concisely and effectively. Skilled at creating and building presentations in Powerpoint or AdobeCC, and able to make complex observations and insights understandable.

Physical demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear; and use hands to manipulate objects or controls. The employee is regularly required to stand and walk. On occasion the incumbent may be required to stoop, bend or reach above the shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds. Specific conditions of this job are typical of frequent and continuous computer-based work requiring periods of sitting; close vision and ability to adjust focus. Up to 40% travel, some international and valid Driver's License required.
