Position Summary

To serve in the Grounds Department and assist the Head Groundskeeper and Assistant Head Groundskeeper in a variety of functions, including performing grounds keeping, basic equipment and vehicle servicing, and repair tasks.

Description of Key Responsibilities

1.Perform grounds keeping functions, consisting of mowing, fertilizing, seeding, aerating, watering, etc. Maintain nursery for plants, bushes and sod. Other functions include: planting, sodding, edging, pruning, weeding and trimming. Equipment used includes tractors; powered mowers (both riding and walk-behind); other powered equipment such as chain saws, chippers and hedge-trimmers; and hand tools.

2.Perform cleaning, servicing, and repair of facilities and equipment; repair/construct of fences, irrigation lines, etc.; pick-up debris; repair vandalism damage. Clean and service equipment, including greasing, fueling, and sharpening of blades. Assist in repair of vehicles and equipment. Clean and organize shop.

3.Pick-up necessary materials and supplies from vendors, including parts for vehicle and equipment repairs. Deliver and pick-up equipment undergoing heavy repairs by outside shops.

4.Store, erect and remove campus signage as directed.

5.Patch, seal and stripe parking lots and other paved areas.

6.Set-up and relocate/remove to storage furniture and other equipment necessary for specific functions.

7.Assist in security functions, including crowd and parking control at specific times and functions.

8.Perform other related duties and tasks as appropriately assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1.Ability to communicate in the English language, both orally and in writing, in order to receive and give assignments and instructions, understand written procedures and cautions, prepare written requests (i.e., requisitions), record work completed, etc.

2.Ability to utilize basic mathematical skills necessary for calculating quantities, preparing estimates, etc.

3.A working knowledge of basic grounds keeping and landscaping operations and techniques.

4.A working knowledge of basic servicing and maintenance operations as applied to both facilities and equipment.

5.Ability to safely and effective transport (which may involve lifting up to 60 pounds) and utilize materials and equipment used in grounds keeping and facility servicing and maintenance and servicing and repairing of vehicles and equipment. Ability to work safely from ladders, scaffolds, and other elevated positions.

6.Ability to work outdoors in all kinds of weather, including severely inclement weather, and to work other-than-normal and, at times, long hours.

Distinguishing Characteristics

Individuals in this position are important contributors to ensuring a pleasant appearance on the campus, and thus have a significant impact on the image of the College in the eyes of its many populations.

The College's work force which is responsible for buildings and grounds maintenance is generally made up of individuals who each perform a wide variety of duties, and whose work strongly affects a diverse group of users of the facilities. Thus, employees in this area are expected to be multi-skilled, flexible, and able to work cooperatively with each other (to the extent of doing work of subordinates when necessary) and with other members of the campus community, often without direct supervision. Because of the nature of the work, reliable and regular attendance is essential.

An individual in this position is often visible to users of campus facilities. Uniforms furnished by the College, must be worn at all times determined by supervisor.

An individual in this position is responsible for snow and ice removal from critical areas of the campus, and responding to other emergency conditions. It can be expected that days and hours worked will at times be other than, or in addition to, normal business days and hours, and working conditions may be harsh.

This position may assist in the handling and use of toxic and/or hazardous materials. Care must be taken to ensure that all applicable rules and regulations are followed.

This position may assist in the supervision of part-time workers, including students, necessitating the exercising of common supervisory skills.

Experience

Experience: Experience in basic grounds maintenance, equipment service and repair and supervision of others is strongly desired.

Licenses or Certifications

License: A valid driver's license is required.
