Job Description

The Department of Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science at the Missouri University of Science and Technology is seeking applicants for the position of Reactor Engineer at the campus nuclear research reactor, MSTR. The Reactor Engineer uses technical knowledge, skills and creativity to solve complex and stimulating problems related to facility operations, experiments, and instrumentation improvement. The Reactor Engineer works closely with reactor staff, students and faculty to support the facility's three main missions: education, training, and research.

The Missouri S&T reactor has been in operation since 1961 and was the first nuclear reactor in the state of Missouri. The current license allows up to 200 kilowatts thermal power. The reactor facility currently has two staff with one licensed as a Senior Reactor Operator (SRO), as well as several students holding both SRO and Reactor Operator (RO) licenses. The campus Radiation Safety Officer and Health Physics staff also work closely with reactor staff.

Description of Work and Key Responsibilities:

• Develops detailed designs, drawings, and procedures for new prototype equipment and/or project space. Performs both modifications and revisions on designs, drawings, etc.
• Obtain and maintain a Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) license within 18 months of start date
• Install, repair, replace and maintain analog and digital control room equipment and document changes per Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations
• Provides technical and diagnostic support for existing reactor research, service, and operational equipment, instrumentation and systems
• Evaluates information/data and counsels internal and external parties about reactor capabilities and functions
• Solves complex problems and analyses. Exercises judgment based on the analysis of multiple sources of information, determining gaps, providing recommendations, etc.
• May lead small projects with manageable risks and resource requirements (e.g., plans, develops, coordinates and supervises construction and installation of reactor research, service and operational projects, instrumentation and systems)
• Operates and supervises operation of a university research reactor by students, operator trainees, and licensed operators
• Reviews and designs projects, instrumentation and systems to conform to various Federal and professional codes and standards such as the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and Building Officials and Code Administrators International (BOCA)
• Able to gain an in-depth technical knowledge of reactor instrumentation and controls as well as broad, conceptual, and practical knowledge of reactor functions and related phenomena
• Able to gain knowledge of best practices in the reactor function and how own area integrates with other functions

Minimum Qualifications

• A Bachelor's degree in related/relevant area and at least 3 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.
• Additional licensures are necessary as required by regulatory authorities

Preferred Qualifications

• Holds Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field (e.g. Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering)
• Possesses practical experience in the installation, repair and maintenance of analog electronics and programmable logic controllers
• Must be able to pass an FBI background check
