Our Claims team is currently seeking a Sr. SIU Investigator in Michigan.This is a Full time/Exempt


Position Overview:

The Sr. Special Investigator is responsible for the field investigation of potentially fraudulent claims and policies. This position will be based out of our Howell, Michigan office and will handle cases primarily in the state of Michigan. Work from home is an option. Investigations will focus on property, auto and medical cases (PIP, BI, GL) and may include other lines of business. A company car will be provided. This position requires the organization and planning of cases that are referred through the SIU system and the successful resolution of the work that is assigned. This person has demonstrated a higher level of ability in the investigative field than that of the Special Investigator and able to handle more complex investigative issues on a regular basis. The investigator will perform relevant field work that will include interviewing and coordination and collaboration with other company SIU staff, law enforcement, fire department personnel, NICB, and Department of Insurance Investigators. This person may be called to testify and present evidence in either criminal or civil trials.


Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  • Responds to assigned investigations by developing a logical action plan, carrying out the plan and reporting on the results of the investigation
  • Development, collection and safeguarding of evidentiary material to support the investigation
  • Demonstrates strong written and verbal communication skills; promotes and facilitates free and open communication
  • Works with confidential sources during investigations of suspected insurance fraud
  • Develops and maintains contacts internal and external to the SIU process, such as Law Enforcement, other Company SIU staffs and Fraud Bureau Personnel.
  • Adheres to applicable statutes and regulations
  • Participates in fraud awareness training, as required
  • Participates in decision making discussions with Company personnel during and at the conclusion of the SIU investigation
  • Demonstrates extreme sense of urgency in work and meeting deadlines
  • Cultivates an environment of teamwork and collaboration
  • Takes a leadership role in the SIU
  • May be responsible for mentoring and training less experienced investigators

Essential Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree or commensurate investigative experience in the insurance environment
  • 3+ years of SIU experience
  • Exhibits good judgment and makes decisions in an informed, confident and timely manner
  • Agile and adapts to new or different changing situations, requirements or priorities
  • Dedicated to meeting the expectations and requirements of internal and external customers
  • Knowledge of customer's needs and good faith claim practices
  • Ability to work independently with low dependency needs
  • Highly articulate and able to provide clear and concise direction
  • Possesses a strong moral and work ethic, is trustworthy and able to maintain confidentiality
  • Aggressive self-starter with a commitment to self-development
  • Persistent, persevering and results driven
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to be flexible and adjust to a high-volume environment
  • Thinks critically and anticipates, recognizes, identifies and develops solutions to problems in a timely manner

  • Familiarity with investigative techniques, such as interviewing and evidence collection
  • Ability to deal with high conflict situations
  • Strong mentoring skills

Physical demands & work environment:

Ability to use a personal computer and other standard office equipment

Ability to travel as necessary

Ability to operate a motor vehicle and possess a valid driver's license

Ability to drive for extended periods and able to get in and out of a vehicle numerous times a day
