Span of Control:

The Formulation Chemist is a member of the technical services team who is responsible for all aspects of product development and support. This role also provides technical support to product sales and production functions. This position does not directly manage any staff, but is responsible for overseeing product development and directing any staff in completion of that task.

Major Job Function:

Driving the development, improvement, and maintenance of innovative and safer cleaning technologies for Mirachem.

Classification:

Full Time, Exempt.

Travel Requirement:

Limited, non-routine.

Introductory Period:

90 days

General Description:

The Formulation Chemist is focused on the development of new product innovations, revising existing formulas and maintaining data for current production products. This position requires a strong product development background and experience with liquid cleaning and/or surfactant systems. In addition to routine tasks, this individual will be responsible for the development and management of several simultaneous projects requiring attention to detail and organization.

Mirachem is team-driven company. All employees are expected to assist in other areas of the company when the situation warrants, whether or not it relates to their primary function. This will include tasks such as office organization, work area clean up and maintenance, or other projects as requested by management.

Specific Duties:

Duties include:

  • Identify new or creative solutions for product development
  • Works with sales, marketing and vendors to ensure customer needs are met through development
  • Develop products from concept including prototype development, stability, verification of specifications and validation of product performance
  • Document material data and maintain records on specifications
  • Troubleshooting of product issues with production, quality and customers
  • Prepare timely reports and provide updates on project status using good data collection and analytical skills
  • Manage technical relationships with vendors
  • Work with regulatory to develop product documentation for labels, SDS, and technical materials
  • Manufacture prototype batches for testing
  • Conduct finished material quality control and documentation
  • Maintain technical library and product library
  • Stay current with new technology, research and applications
  • Support and follow Quality Management System and documented processes
  • Work independently with limited guidance
  • Participate on cross-functional teams
  • Follow safety protocol and laboratory best practices

Work Schedule:

This position is exempt and is responsible for its own work schedule with Director of Technical Services approval. Regular company operating hours are 7:00am - 4:00pm, Monday through Friday.

Need for Supervision:

This is a position largely works independently on assigned tasks and long term projects. Manager is available for assistance, but does not monitor this position closely. This position is very detailed, requires a high level of organization and employee must be a self-starter.

Education/ Experience:

BS Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or BioChemistry. Five years experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as technical specifications, laboratory reports, safety data sheets and quality process documentation. Ability to write technical reports and correspondence. Ability to speak professionally and effectively with customers, suppliers and internal staff.

Mathematical Skills:

Above average knowledge of mathematics required. Ability to apply mathematical concepts of probability and statistical inference, algebra and geometry to practical situations. Ability to calculate discounts, fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is regularly required to work at a desk. Laboratory conditions with moderate noise level from production equipment and forklifts in adjacent warehouse area. The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, outdoor weather conditions, and risk of electrical shock.

Computer Skills:

Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, basic knowledge of: Sharepoint, Google Apps and database systems.

Technical / Specialized Skills:

Knowledge of chemical composition, structure, and properties of substances and of the chemical processes and transformations that they undergo. This includes uses of chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods. Familiarity with lab equipment such as pH meter, FTIR, moisture balance, refractometer.

Management and Personnel Functions:

Mirachem, LLC utilizes our parent company, Heritage Crystal-Clean (HCC) for our HR function. Mirachem has the responsibility for the workplace, day-to-day management, recruiting, staffing, disciplinary matters, job maintenance and performance. HCC prepares payroll, taxes and withholdings, workers compensation, benefits administration, and all other administrative and non-operational human resource functions. Any HR issues are to be addressed to Mirachem's Vice President of Operations, but you will receive correspondence from HCC for payroll, insurance and other routine requests.
