Conducts Listing and annual field inspections of all types of burglar and fire alarm system installations including those that are beyond the scope of existing standards, have no published standards, or involve unique features requiring frequent use of independent judgment. Participates in the Standards development process. Gives presentations on Certificate Services programs to Authorities Having Jurisdiction, alarm companies and others as necessary. Serves as technical consultant for all burglar and fire alarm equipment and installation standards, the National Electrical Code, National Fire Codes, and all building codes relevant to the operation of central station monitoring facilities and the installation of burglar and fire alarm systems. Serves as either Primary Designated Engineer or Designated Engineer in area of expertise. Facilitates resolution of adverse field report findings.

  • Conducts annual field inspections of all burglar, fire alarm systems and Emergency Responder Communications Enhancement Systems (ERCES) to verify that performance of the system, arrangement of monitoring devices, continuity of circuits, wiring of control units, and other security elements are consistent with the types of systems listed on the Certificates. Prepares report of findings and follows up to verify that deficiencies are resolved.
  • Serves as technical consultant in assigned areas. Applies detailed knowledge of all burglar, ERCES and fire alarm equipment and installation standards, the National Electrical Code, National Fire Codes and all applicable building codes. Facilitates difficult resolutions of adverse field report findings.
  • Maintains knowledge of evolving local codes relevant to the operation of central station monitoring facilities and the installation of burglar and fire alarm systems. Applies detailed knowledge of all types of burglar and fire alarm systems to new products, and expresses an opinion or renders judgment on the acceptability of new systems.
  • Develops and manages a work schedule from an annual assignment of work. This includes scheduling appointments with customers, reviewing files for a profile of past performance, selecting certificates to be analyzed, and arranging travel schedules and hotel accommodations.
  • Provides training for all UL Categories and developing all staff assigned to the group.
  • Conducts building consultations by reviewing building plans/blueprints and performing site inspections to evaluate suitability of construction materials, electrical systems, utilities, security, signal processing and administrative systems.
  • Discusses technical issues in all areas of alarm systems with Authorities Having Jurisdiction, industry representatives, and customers. Communicates with customers to schedule appointments, discusses UL requirements for Listing compliance, explains results of field inspections, and resolves adverse field report findings. Attends meetings and seminars to educate the public in areas of burglar and fire alarm safety.
  • May serve as technical advisor on committees. May assist in business development opportunities through direct customer contact.
  • Gives presentations on Certificate Services programs to Authorities Having Jurisdiction, alarm companies and others as necessary.
  • Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct, and follow all physical and digital security practices.
  • Performs other duties as directed. You will work with state and /or local Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) to develop fire protection policies and ordinances that support UL Certified installed fire alarm and Emergency Responder Communications Enhancement Systems (ERCES) This will be accomplished by building AHJ understanding of Code requirements mandating 3rd party Certification of installed fire alarm systems and benefits to community obtained from enforcement of these Code requirements. When appropriate, you will support AHJs through any local political processes related to Code enforcement.
  • In collaboration with AHJs, you will provide or coordinate local contractor training and support needed to obtain Listings and issue Fire Alarm and ERCES Certificates. In addition, you will maintain ongoing "account management" relations with AHJs and Industry including mediation of misunderstandings between AHJs and alarm companies relative to Code compliance and Certificate program administrative issues.
  • Drives consistency, integrity and engineering quality in the establishment of UL product safety certifications requirements that are applied by staff located at all UL offices and affiliates. Works within technically appropriate UL Standards and Outlines of Investigation as well as certification requirement decisions and ancillary documents for consistent interpretation and application of requirements for UL certification services.

  • Minimum 2-year Technical Degree. Some University education in applied science or a related discipline + NICET* III plus, directly related experience required.
  • Detailed knowledge of the technical vocabulary common to the fire and burglar alarm industry.
  • Detailed knowledge of applicable testing apparatus and techniques common to the fire and burglar alarm industry.
  • Detailed knowledge Fire Serviced political Operating Environments a plus.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare procedure reports and associated materials related to Listing inspections.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact with team members and stakeholders. Interaction for training for current and up and coming ERCES programs.
  • Travel up to 50%.
