Job Summary

AECOM is seeking a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our downtown Minneapolis office. Seeking a highly-motivated individual to join our dynamic Minneapolis office and be part our international engineering practice. This individual will manage HVAC and plumbing teams for healthcare, corporate office, clean rooms, labs, and high tech clients. The ideal candidate will have a passion for designing custom solutions for unique projects, mentoring a team, and developing calculations, construction drawings, design reports, and specifications to support mechanical and plumbing portions of design work in accordance with building codes.

Job Responsibilities:

The Senior Mechanical Engineer should be capable of working independently with limited supervision to complete both small and large projects and may serve as a Discipline Representative. Excellent written and verbal communication skills with internal and external clients is required. Candidate must be well organized, be able to demonstrate critical thinking and can quickly recognize issues and be part of the solution.

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will be expected to:

  • Be self-motivated with strong work ethic and take pride in your work

  • Serve as a Discipline Representative

  • Have knowledge of the ASHRAE standards, NFPA and ICC codes, in addition to experience with analysis and layout of HVAC systems, hydronic piping, air distribution and HVAC products and materials

  • Concisely express complex system solutions in very early design phases to share intent either internally for further development, or externally to assist design partners

  • Complete mechanical systems designs for projects of all sizes

  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and judgement based on experience to design and construct HVAC and plumbing systems and equipment in buildings using building information modeling

  • Coordinate HVAC&P systems with other disciplines to produce complete building designs

  • Make major design recommendations and design decisions with little input from senior staff

  • Coordinate design and schedule with other disciplines such as architectural, structural, electrical, technology, clerical, and equipment suppliers

  • Maintain accurate project documentation and design data for permanent project files

  • Act as an adviser and review correspondence prepared by junior project team members

  • Evaluate project staffing requirements, analyze problems, and write reports

  • Attend project meetings, or when appropriate, delegate activities

  • Meet with clients, prepare proposals and presentations while maintaining good client relations

  • Assist in project checking for quality control on other projects

  • Have knowledge of design techniques, tools, and principles involved in production of technical plans and drawings

  • Switch between work on multiple/different projects daily

  • Represent the organization and maintain liaison with individuals and related organizations

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or Architectural Engineering with Mechanical specialty, plus a minimum of six (6) years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong work experience with an emphasis on HVAC systems and project designs for buildings

  • 10+ years of mechanical engineering experience within a consulting or design-build firm

  • Documented experience with advanced design and diverse projects and clients

  • Experience with sustainable design

  • Laboratory, Hospital, Corporate Office facility design experience

  • Excellent communication skills: articulate and confident

  • Creative thinker with effective teamwork skills

  • Enjoy developing innovative solutions to challenging opportunities

  • Have a high degree of integrity, professional ethics, respect, and responsibility
