The Washington, DC office of SmithGroup is currently accepting applications for Mechanical Engineering Interns for the summer of 2023. Aspiring engineers who thrive in an environment of collaboration and mentoring, and who demonstrate a high degree of creativity are encouraged to apply.

As an Intern you will:

  • Utilize REVIT 3D modeling software to assist the lead engineers in the design of HVAC systems in various building types.
  • Perform heating and cooling load calculations using Trane Trace and/or IESVE
  • Perform pressure drop and static pressure calculations for air and hydronic systems
  • Work in collaborative integrated teams of professionals that include engineers, architects, and planners
  • Assist in construction administration including responding to RFI's, visiting the construction site (if project site allows) to gather information and/or helpto prepare a punch list


The successful applicant:

  • Has at least 6 semesters of coursework towards a Bachelor's degree in Architectural orMechanical Engineering completed by the summer
  • Is detail oriented and self-motivated.
  • Has strong graphic and verbal communication skills.
  • Understands basic structural, spatial and building code concepts

SmithGroup's internship program provides students with the opportunity to apply both classroom learning and past experience to real world application. Interns will participate in hands-on project work, office activities, and site visits. Internships and internship activities will be a hybrid of virtual/in-office.
