Make a list of the current experiences, people, projects or other attributes you enjoy in your
current role. If your parking spot is the only thing you can think of right now, try this exercise on another day. Remember your feelings will pass and they are rarely factual.
Make the time to thank the people who make a real contribution to your work life.
Because of the busy pace in most work environments today, it may seem extravagant to make room for a spontaneous, informal dialogue. However, making time for this type of connection can actually make a big difference on a project.
Brainstorm ways to improve your current career, examples if needed: project roles, your schedule or even your workspace. If you’re in a rut identify ways you can change it. Ask for help with this if you are feeling stuck.
Turn off technology tools and be present, listen without fixing concerns. Let them know how you can relate if possible and ask: Do you want me to relay what I’ve heard? Or can we identify what you need to take the next step? In most cases people need to be respectfully heard more than anything else.
Most people tell themselves “when I get or do (insert their dream), I will arrive or I’ll have made it,” and various other versions on this same theme. Wanting something better for yourself and others is not wrong, yet there is great strength and power in accepting the here and now. Whether you are satisfied in your role, or in transition, starting a new job or even unsure of where you want to go—look for acceptance. Change is easier to manifest if you’re not struggling with or even drama-making with your current circumstances.
