Job Summary

The Intern, Industrial Hygienist - Safety is responsible for understanding the techniques used in the industrial hygiene in order to collect and evaluate data, as well as apply regulatory and professional standards to protect the employees and the community. The role is initially performed side by side with the Manager, Industrial Hygiene to collect air and noise samples among Transportation, Engineering and Mechanical operations. After an initial orientation, the incumbent works independently and provides daily or weekly reports on the progress and the challenges incurred.

Major ResponsibilitiesEvaluate Occupational Noise Exposures on CN Locomotives to Develop a Hearing Conservation Program for Transportation as per Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) standards
  • Perform noise monitoring on locomotive train runs (locals and through freights) on a variety of CN locomotive models
  • Perform noise monitoring on various railroad humps and rail car switching operations
  • Communicate the results as required by the FRA
  • Review employee hearing protection measures to determine effectiveness
  • Determine compliance with FRA noise standards
  • Evaluate record retention
Evaluate Employee Exposure to Respirable Crystalline Silica and Hearing Conservation programs to Ensure Compliance with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations
  • Perform air and noise monitoring on four-production tie and surfacing gangs
  • Communicate the results
  • Review the protective measures for effectiveness
  • Determine compliance with OSHA silica and noise standards
  • Evaluate record retention
Evaluate CN's compliance with OSHA Hazard Communication program
  • Perform spot inspections of hazardous materials inventories, and update as appropriate
  • Determine if the Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) are available in the system and update them accordingly
Requirements
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
Education
  • Working towards a Bachelor's Degree in an Occupational Safety and Health Field or an allied health or science (biology, chemistry, physics) (minimum 3 years completed). Working towards a Master's Degree in an Occupational Safety and Health field is preferred.
