Senior Paralegal Specialist

PAE has an upcoming need for a Senior Paralegal Specialist.

  • Reviews documents and other materials produced pursuant to subpoena and/or discovery; maintains inventory of materials produced pursuant to subpoena and/or discovery; and prepares outline of substance of documents/materials produced pursuant to subpoena and/or discovery.

  • Prepares and maintains a variety of trial-related documents, e.g., discovery letters, exhibit lists, jury instructions, and trial subpoenas, by applying a thorough knowledge of the Federal Rules of Evidence and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and application of practical litigation experience.

  • In an independent setting, performs a wide variety of duties involved in evaluating potential cases for investigation and prosecution. Work involves varied duties encompassing diverse and complex technical issues relating to the functional area of law.

  • Uses on-line computer-based information systems for legal research to gather and analyze data.

  • Conducts extensive legal research to analyze and verify accuracy of citations, and correct erroneous or incomplete citations using federal and state reporter systems, computer research and microfilm.

  • Performs legal research by examining all references in briefs and other memoranda.

  • Analyzes and identifies legal issues in all cases.

  • Evaluates and interprets various records and other factual documents to ascertain accuracy of cited references to support the statements made in the brief.

  • Makes corrections and revisions to table of contents and table of authorities to briefs where necessary in conformance with proper Supreme Court style, and Supreme Court and Blue Book rules.

  • Performs legal research of relevant statutes and precedents related to pending litigation.

  • Researches precedent and related cases in the files to obtain relevant information and summarizes previous dispositions and settlements.

  • Researches methods of acquiring further evidence including affidavit or interrogatories, further hearings, or various other means of communication with sources of record and exercises judgment and knowledge of laws of states and tribes to determine if information obtained is relevant for documentary evidence.

  • Performs research and fact-finding to support other organizations.

  • Researches cite checked material in reviewing briefs for submission to the Supreme Court, processing cases, responding to questions, or dealing with legal issues.

  • Researches applicable Federal or state laws and statutes and sometimes tribal laws to brief an Administrative Law Judge of precedent cases or situations that may influence the determination of these.

  • Utilizes Desk-top Publishing to convert draft Supreme Court briefs through MS-DOS or Word Perfect file format for camera-ready copy for printing purposes.

  • Prepares reports, exhibits, memoranda, and/or statistical analysis to be used in litigating cases, answering legal questions, or making legal determinations.

  • Prepares, organizes, analyzes, and processes legal documents, records and other evidence.

  • Provides training to various personnel, including state and local law enforcement officers on an Agency's processes and procedures.

  • Interviews witnesses for factual information.

  • Assists in preparing trial documents, including metrics, charts, exhibits and monetary computations.

  • Uses federal financial management computer systems to prepare and track payment activity.

  • Reviews and examines forms and documents for all cases to ensure completeness and accuracy. If information is missing, initiates correspondence to seek information that will complete the case file in preparation of a hearing.

  • Assists an Administrative Law Judge at hearings, including performance of court reporter duties such as preparing and briefing witnesses, handling exhibits, recording testimony, and monitoring procedural aspects of the hearing.

  • Upon completion of an administrative hearing, may review files to determine sufficiency of evidence for disposition of the case. Where necessary, initiates correspondence seeking information to fully develop the record in preparation for final adjudication.

  • Manages a high-volume caseload involving sensitive data; Maintains progress of all cases in a multi-agency database.

  • Prepares correspondence in response to inquiries from Agencies, Lawyers, heirs and/or other interested parties.

  • Develops tables of contents and indices to briefs in accordance with established formats.

  • Lists cited cases, opinions and miscellaneous references in briefs.

  • Establishes and maintains a variety of files. Searches legal reference files for information needed by AUSAs. Separates, screens, selects, assembles, and organizes case files and records material for disposition or transfer to records depository in accordance with established procedures.

  • Performs docketing duties such as opening, updating, and closing cases through use of the automated case tracking system. Searches database for required information as necessary.

  • Maintains calendar of assigned active cases. Tracks filing and hearing dates. Develops and maintains suspense system for ongoing cases and informs the AUSA of pending dates and deadlines. Assists in processing requests for disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA): reviews and clarifies for completeness and legal conformance to the Freedom of Information Act(FOIA) requirements; identifies requested information and conduct necessary research; reviews FOIA requests and determines propriety of release of information on routine matters and provides recommendations regarding complex requests.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Utilizes office research tools including: Lexis/Nexis, Accurint, AutotrackXP, Westlaw, Credit Bureau Reports, and PACER.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a US government clearance.

  • Must have a Paralegal Certificate or similar; capability to promptly attain any related Paralegal certificates generally accepted in the Paralegal community.

  • Must have five (5) years of combined experience working with investigations, identifying criminal violations, and conducting advanced paralegal work.

  • Proficiency in the use of legal research programs (such as WestLaw, Lexis Nexis, Pacer etc.).

  • Experience working with other agencies (law enforcement and federal preferred).

  • Proficient in using a personal computer to produce a wide range of documents utilizing Microsoft Office software programs (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook).

  • Ability to use, understand and maintain directories, personnel lists, and other guides and references to provide a variety of information on the office and to refer questions to other offices.

  • Strong communication skills and is able to maintain regular contact with law enforcement agencies, witnesses, opposing counsel, experts, and court personnel.

  • Travel and overtime may be required.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience in the use of legal process, grand jury subpoenas and search warrants preferred.

  • Prior knowledge of working for or coordinating with a law enforcement agency such as requesting police reports or coordinating with officers. Federal experience is helpful but not required.

  • Strong internal-personal skills that will foster positive interaction with the following USAO stakeholders and agency partners; including but not limited to: US Attorney's, US Probation Officers, US Marshals, US District Clerk Staff, and defense Attorneys in a courteous and tactful manner.

  • Strong ability to be trained on the ability and skills to create summaries of deposition transcripts creates charts and chronologies for Grand Jury subpoenas and participate in witness interviews of assigned cases. This skillset may be obtained in post-secondary coursework.
