Description

The GIS Intern position is responsible for performing basic GIS mapping and analysis in addition to data acquisition, review, and editing to support our client projects and software. The ideal candidate is a critical thinker who possesses strong communication and organizational skills, has a solid understanding of vector and raster GIS, and is interested in pursuing a career in GIS. This position also requires strong technical skills to pair with creative problem solving skills to assist on a wide variety of projects.

The Team

Our practice focuses on applying advanced actuarial techniques and geospatial technology to develop innovative insurance products for traditional & start-up insurers, as well as the associated state regulatory rate filing support. We are thought leaders in climate change, artificial intelligence, telematics, and other leading-edge research. We work on some of today's most important insurance problems, including modernizing flood insurance and addressing the wildfire crisis in California. We also do traditional actuarial work such as ratemaking, reserving, predictive modeling & competitive analysis, plus a variety of special projects.

The Role

On a typical assignment, the GIS Intern would be responsible for:

  • Acquisition, review, and processing of third-party GIS data
  • Creating map exhibits for client deliverables
  • Creating interactive maps to support internal decision making
  • Assisting with the creation of custom raster and vector geospatial datasets across multiple platforms, such as ArcGIS, PostgreSQL, and Microsoft SQL
  • Preparing and appending geographic variables to large location level datasets
  • Checking team member work for technical accuracy

The nature of the projects may vary widely throughout the internship.

Qualifications

Required:

  • A college degree (or active pursuit of college degree)
  • Course work or previous working experience with GIS
  • Technically proficient with ArcPro / ArcPy
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government issued security clearance

Desired:

  • Proficient with Python (outside of ArcPy)
  • Proficient with SQL queries
  • Proficient with Excel
  • Service oriented
  • Good with detail
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Located in the San Francisco Bay Area
Office

Milliman is a firm of consultants & actuaries serving the full spectrum of business, governmental & financial organizations. This position is located in Milliman's San Francisco office. The office is currently closed due to COVID and will be remote until the office reopens. The San Francisco, CA office houses one of the largest casualty actuarial consulting practices on the West Coast. Our San Francisco office is located in the Financial District, an easy walk from BART & most commuter bus lines.

Compensation:

The base salary for the position may vary with the candidate's qualifications and experience.
