TITLE OF POSITION: Metallurgist, R & D--New Product Development


OVERVIEW: Seeking an action-oriented, results-focused Metallurgist, Metallurgical Engineer, or Materials Engineer to join our R&D New Product Development Team. Must have demonstrated experience in practical metallurgy/materials science processes within either a manufacturing or R&D environment. Will support the development and scale-up of new alloys via cast/wrought or powder metallurgy processing routes. Experience in a lean manufacturing environment will be helpful.


  • Scale up new alloys developed in the lab to production scale by coordinating with Alloy Development, Process Metallurgy, Operations, and Commercial
  • Lead projects to create process routings for new product developments within Carpenter's manufacturing environment
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders throughout the product development process to ensure alignment between processing route, product attributes, and performance needs
  • Work with the commercial organization to uncover unmet customer needs and identify technical solutions to those needs
  • Prioritize work to ensure development projects are completed on time, on budget, and to the desired specification
  • Provide a diversified range of technical services to our internal and external customers in support of Carpenter's strategy
  • Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned


  • BS, MS, or Ph.D. degree in Materials Science and Engineering/related discipline and/or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years' proven technical experience in specialty alloys
  • Proven capability in driving a successful product development project from concept to implementation with realization of anticipated benefits
  • Comprehensive knowledge of metallurgical processing, principles, standards, methods, practices, and equipment required
  • Project management experience with the ability to lead small teams
  • Persuasive communication and interpersonal skills-verbal, written and the ability to listen intently
  • Ability to work independently and effectively with employees and customers at all levels
  • PC proficiency


  • Experience/background in alloy steels, stainless steels, nickel-base alloys, electronic/magnetic alloys, or titanium-strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with commercial CALPHAD based packages--preferred
  • Background in a lean or six-sigma manufacturing environment-preferred
  • Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills-preferred
  • Ability to prioritize and complete projects on time and budget-preferred
