ChampionX has an immediate need for a Pilot Plant Group Leader located in Sugar Land, TX. The Group Leader will head the RD&E Pilot Plant operations in support of ChampionX Chemical Technologies research, manufacturing, and process improvement activities. The candidate will be responsible for leading the efforts to transform small, bench-scale procedures/products into robust, large scale manufacturing procedures/products via efficient, effective and safe operations and to improve existing plant operations via troubleshooting and continuous improvement.

This role requires a people-oriented leader with strong process engineering and chemistry experience and a proven track record of success working in a manufacturing and innovation-based environment. Must be able to scale up processes from laboratory scale to plant manufacturing scale. The candidate must be adept in working in collaboration with various business and supply chain stakeholders to understand the needs of our business to produce new solutions and improve existing manufacturing operations. In addition, the incumbent will be expected to partner with Marketing, Sales and Supply Chain leadership and establish influential relationships with the organization.

The Pilot Plant provides services for a wide variety of chemistries and manufacturing methods and is a critical component of supporting growth for ChampionX. We are looking for a dynamic leader with a strong technical background and strategic vision to both maintain existing equipment and incorporate new capabilities into the organization. The candidate will lead and champion the commissioning and operation of new facilities involving lab scale oxyalkylation in Sugar Land in addition to supporting any 3rd party tolling/process development activities. The role includes seeking ways to leverage data analytics/digital connectivity to improve operations and provide insights into our manufacturing operations.

What You Will Do:

  • Owns the operational safety of the RD&E Pilot Plant organization. Embeds a culture of safety throughout their team and ensures that all activities are performed in a manner that conforms to company safety and regulatory requirements and policies. Reinforces the company safety culture and holds personnel accountable for good safety practice. Collaborates with RDE and Plant Operations to ensure harmonized safety culture and practices. Focuses on achieving our goal of zero harm to personnel and to the environment. Experience with Process Safety Management and Risk Analysis is beneficial.

  • Develops organizational talent and succession plans and provides ongoing coaching and mentoring for staff. Owns the strategy for team and organizational development, including safety and employee engagement.

  • Leads the RD&E Pilot Plant organization to meet the business growth needs and operational objectives.

  • Member of RD&E Leadership Team providing technical counsel on manufacturing and scale up advancements, new opportunities and improvements in operational/organizational efficiencies and productivity.

  • Responsible for environmental and regulatory compliance (including all permits and waste/effluent disposal) and maintains awareness of current and pending regulatory changes.

  • Supports the development and utility of intellectual property, through patent filings, trade secrets, and the support of technical notebooks and reports as required.

  • Ensures ongoing external awareness of manufacturing technology, competition capability, and emerging and disruptive opportunities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, chemistry or related scientific/technical discipline required.

  • Seven (7) years of relevant experience including successful technology scale up, new product development processes and plant operations.

  • Experience operating in matrixed technical, manufacturing and business environments.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage well with stakeholders to translate their needs into effective outcomes. Experience in leading teams is preferred.

Physical Demands:

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in engineering, chemistry or related scientific/technical discipline

  • Experience in process engineering and/or plant manufacturing.

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage well with stakeholders to translate their needs into effective outcomes.

  • Experience in leading teams

  • Experience operating in matrixed technical, manufacturing and business environments.

  • Experience in process engineering and/or plant manufacturing is preferred.
