Job Description

Seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow to join Dr. Loretta Li's laboratory at Lurie Children's Hospital / Northwestern University. We are a recently established translational leukemia research laboratory that uses a variety of biochemical, molecular, and cell biology approaches to identify new therapeutic targets, develop preclinical models of disease, and test novel therapeutics both in vitro and in vivo using mouse models. Much of the lab's work to date has focused on Philadelphia chromosome (Ph) like B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia though the postdoc would have the opportunity to work on a new project focused on T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The successful candidate will be a team player capable of handling multiple tasks and adaptable to a fast-paced research environment.

Essential Job Functions:

The postdoctoral fellow will carry out an independent research project under the supervision of the principal investigator, Dr. Loretta Li. The successful candidate will be responsible for the following:

  • Designing and conducting laboratory experiments to advance the research progress in the lab.

  • Skilled handling of mice as needed to meet project goals.

  • Analyzing data and troubleshooting experiments as needed.

  • Maintaining detailed records of their laboratory work, results, and data analyses.

  • Preparing presentations for lab meetings, journal clubs, research seminars, and research conferences.

  • Synthesizing data and generating figures for grants, manuscripts, and presentations at the local, national, and international level.

  • Working with the principal investigator to write grant proposals and progress reports related to the research project.

  • Supervision and training of students and technicians in the lab.

  • Sharing in the responsibilities of routine laboratory maintenance.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Successful completion of a PhD at an accredited university in Molecular Biology, Cancer Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, or a related field is required. Candidates with an MD and at least 3 years of previous research experience will also be considered.

  • Familiarity with basic handling of DNA, RNA, and protein, experience with molecular cloning, CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, chromatin immunoprecipitation, and retroviral / lentiviral work. Experience with programing and bioinformatics analyses of large genomic datasets would be an asset.

  • Comfort with handling mice is required. This includes previous experience with or willingness to learn about the breeding and weaning of animals, bleeding the mice, tail vein injections, IV, IP, and PO dosing, and necropsy.

  • At least 1 first-author publication is required.

  • 3 strong reference letters.

  • Attention to detail in completing tasks and a strong work ethic is essential. This includes a willingness to critically read and keep up to date on the latest scientific literature, logically troubleshoot problems, and offer both intellectual and technical input during collaborative meetings.

  • The candidate should have flexibility in their schedule to work on weekends and some evenings as needed to meet project goals.

  • Working knowledge of computers, ability to work independently, and function as a team member is essential. Therefore, experience in regular interaction with outside groups is highly desirable.

  • Excellent command of the English language and the ability to communicate effectively. This includes the ability to synthesize research findings for presentation in both oral and written formats.

  • Strong organizational skills and a "can do" attitude. This includes the ability to establish priorities, react promptly to a large variety of requests, and the ability to keep the workplace clean and organized.
