Job Title: Campus Security
Assignment: Full-time, school year
Location: Northfield Campus and Winnetka Campus
Occupational Group: NTESPA - Security Group
Supervisor: Director of Campus Safety

Position Outcomes:
To provide a safe and orderly environment for all staff, students, and visitors on campus. To provide security on exterior school grounds, at the doors, in the hallways and throughout the school buildings. This position also requires one to assist with pedestrian supervision and traffic control outdoors throughout the entire school year.

General Responsibilities:
This work entails considerable contact with students, staff, parents and other visitors to the school. This employee works within clearly established systems and procedures and exercises independent judgment in the performance of routine matters.

Qualifications:
  1. High school diploma or equivalent.
  2. Valid Illinois Driver's License.
  3. Interest in working with high school students.

Knowledge/Abilities/Skills:
  1. Knowledge of school security rules, board policies, and the Student Guidebook and ability to enforce these rules, as trained.
  2. Knowledge of basic computer skills and ability to learn software systems applicable to the position as trained.
  3. Ability to communicate efficiently (written and verbal), make decisions, resolve conflict and effectively work with staff, students, administration and the general public.
  4. Ability to work with high school students and knowledge of adolescent behavior.
  5. Ability to react to unique and emergency situations and ability to take responsible and appropriate courses of action.
  6. Ability to physically move around throughout the buildings (climbing stairs, walking extensively, and standing for extended periods) and work in all types of weather (snow, rain, wind, heat, and cold).
  7. Ability to deescalate inappropriate student behaviors and physically intervene in a student conflict if necessary.
  8. Ability to maintain confidentiality regarding student discipline issues and demonstrate professional discretion.
  9. Ability to acquire and maintain a valid School Bus Driver Permit to drive small school buses.

Position Expectations:
  1. Assists the school administration by promoting a safe environment:
    • monitoring visitor access to the school, including registering visitors and providing directions as needed;
    • reporting unusual activity or suspicions of safety issues to the Security Lead or administration in a timely fashion;
    • maintaining a security presence in the student lounge, cafeteria, washrooms, study halls, corridors, and other areas inside and outside of the school buildings;
    • encouraging appropriate student conduct with regard to school rules and regulations while monitoring and supervising students in assigned areas;
    • enforcing New Trier policies with regard to smoking, parking, loitering, trespassing, vandalism, property damage, alcohol and drug possession or use, and other school rules and regulations;
    • intervening in verbal altercations to de-escalate conflicts and prevent threats to physical safety;
    • confronting inappropriate student behavior in a respectful, assertive, and consistent manner and escorting students to Adviser Chairs or building administrator when needed;
    • assisting with crowd control at special events when requested by monitoring the grounds and entrances to ensure only authorized personnel and authorized visitors enter the event, and ensuring all attendees follow entry screening procedures as required;
    • coordinating with PPS personnel on issues regarding school safety;
    • submitting campus offense reports to adviser chairs and Assistant Principal of Student Programs and Operations as requested;
    • driving district vehicles and busses during and after school hours after appropriate training; and
    • serving as a primary participant in emergency response during safety drills and crisis situations including but not limited to fires, tornadoes and lock down incidents when necessary.
  2. Enforces safety regulations in parking lots and perimeter streets by assisting as crossing guards and traffic controllers; ensures rules governing parking areas are enforced and unauthorized vehicles are removed from District parking lots.
  3. Projects a positive image of the District to parents, students, visitors, and staff, as well as exhibits a positive employee attitude.
  4. Works to secure student belongings by submitting items to lost and found and assists students in retrieving their items.
  5. Assists in annual locker cleanout by securing student personal belongings and ensuring each locker has been reset with a new combination by the beginning of each school year.
  6. Adheres to all policies and procedures outlined in the Security Handbook, Board policies, and Student Guidebook, and meets general employment expectations, including, but not limited to, attendance, professionalism, and timeliness.
  7. Continues job performance enhancement by participating in professional growth activities.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
