Role Summary:
The General Machinist sets up and operates conventional, special purpose, and computer numerical control (CNC) machining centers (mills and lathes) to fabricate metallic and nonmetallic parts by performing the following duties.
Key Accountabilities:
  • Studies blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, or sample part to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished workpiece, sequence of operations, and setup requirements.
  • Measures, marks, and scribes dimensions and reference points on material or workpiece as guides for subsequent machining.
  • Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, jig borers, grinders, and shapers.
  • Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media.
  • Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining and adjusts machine controls or control media as required.
  • Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications using precision measuring tools such as calipers, mics, and height gages.
  • Operates manual machinery which requires moving and relocating tailstock on lathes performed several times a day as required.
  • Knowledge of Okuma and Haas machining centers, as well as Fanuc controls is a plus
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
Competencies:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); three years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Must be able to read blueprints and calipers
Work Requirements:
Employees are not required to lift any certain amount of weight. Employees have access to lifting devices for any weight that is not comfortable to lift. (Hoist, forklift, additional help on request)
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud from milling, drilling and metal turning.
