Bluhm Legal Clinic

Open-Rank Clinical Professor of Law and Director, Tenant Advocacy Clinic

Northwestern Pritzker School of Law invites applications for a full-time clinical faculty member who will serve as faculty director of the Tenant Advocacy Clinic within the Bluhm Legal Clinic. The expected start date is July 1, 2024. The faculty appointment may be a Clinical Professor of Law, Associate Clinical Professor of Law, or Assistant Clinical Professor of Law, at a level commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Evolving out of the Civil Litigation Clinic, one of the first clinics at the Law School, the Tenant Advocacy Clinic works with local tenant organizations including Legal Aid Chicago, Law Center for Better Housing, and Chicago Volunteer Legal Services. The partner organizations refer cases involving low-income tenants, primarily eviction cases. The students in the Clinic are given primary responsibility for their cases under the close supervision of the faculty director and co-teachers. In addition to housing law, the Clinic teaches the students the nuts and bolts of civil litigation.

Role & Responsibilities

The Director will set the vision for the Tenant Advocacy Clinic. Setting the vision includes but is not limited to the following tasks:

Supervising students in their case work;

Teaching a weekly class on housing law and litigation skills;

Teaching about bias, cross-cultural competency, and racism in the context of housing;

Supervising co-teachers and/or fellows in the Tenant Advocacy Clinic;

Working with partner tenant organizations;

Developing advocacy projects involving local housing issues;

According to the Director's vision, leading initiatives that offer students meaningful, practice-oriented learning experiences;

Participating in Bluhm Legal Clinic and Law School meetings, events, and committee work;

Organizing and participating in conferences and meetings addressing housing issues;

Traveling as required for court appearances, depositions, meetings with clients, and, when appropriate, donors; and

Promoting the work of the Clinic to the Law School and to the community.

Required Qualifications

J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school and at least five years of litigation experience in housing law

Exceptional research, writing, and editing skills

Ability to collaborate, a commitment to creating a working environment that is inclusive, equitable and welcoming, and a willingness to honor the diverse experiences and perspectives of Bluhm staff, students, clients, and faculty

Desire to engage in community lawyering and client-centered advocacy, and a willingness to use the law creatively and strategically to seek housing justice

Admission to the Illinois Bar

LOCATION: Chicago, Illinois

COMPENSATION: The salary is competitive and includes an excellent benefits package through Northwestern University. Salary will be commensurate with experience and based on years of relevant work experience.
