Job Description

SUMMARY:

Collective Intelligence & Research (CIR) provides business and practice intelligence resources, research services, and information expertise to ensure reliable and relevant information is available throughout the enterprise to support the firm's business objectives and client work. The Senior Manager, Knowledge Resources supports this mission by overseeing the staffing and performance of the intelligence resources team; by evaluating, procuring, and managing the firm's knowledge resources; and by supporting the implementation of knowledge management technologies and efforts across the firm. The Senior Manager, Knowledge Resources maintains CIR's portfolio of print and digital information resources, raises awareness of the sources available, and helps members of the firm use them optimally to achieve desired outcomes. This role also provides intranet content management support and contributes to projects involving the storage and retrieval of knowledge assets and related workflows.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages the team of professionals who acquire and maintain print and electronic intelligence resources and guides them to the successful and timely completion of projects.
  • Consults with attorneys and business professionals on knowledge resources, knowledge management (KM) strategies, and solutions to meet their information and information sharing needs.
  • Oversees the selection, acquisition, rollout, assessment, and ongoing maintenance of CIR's print and digital resources necessary to support the firm's practices and administrative departments.
  • Evaluates attorney requests to procure new resources according to need, demand, and the availability of alternatives.
  • Negotiates terms and rates for digital resource subscriptions according to Information Services procurement policies.
  • Evaluates CIR's services and collections using quantitative and qualitative methods and tools.
  • Optimizes departmental operations by establishing and documenting best practices and procedures and continuously enhancing CIRs administrative systems.
  • Resolves support inquiries related to CIR's digital resources, coordinating with IT Support and vendor technical support, where appropriate.
  • Plans and coordinates CIR's new hire orientation programs, as well as events, promotion and training activities addressing optimal use of available intelligence resources. Directs on-boarding programs for Summer and Fall Associates.
  • Assists with the preparation of the knowledge resources budget and with the ongoing effort to control expenditures.
  • Supports Director in developing and implementing strategies to expand the use of technologies and information sources across the firm.
  • Provides backup support to team members to ensure timely distribution of resources and availability of a responsive research service. Assists with research requests where appropriate.
  • Coordinates with staff to meet attorney's physical book needs when digital alternatives are not available.
  • Responsible for the day-to-day management of the firm's library facilities and print materials.
  • Carries out other duties and projects as assigned.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS (Must be listed on resume to be considered):

  • An MLS, MLIS and/or JD degree from an accredited university required.
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience providing legal information services required.

COMPETENCIES

  • Focus and attention to detail in managing, classifying, and presenting information for easy access and use of the best available information sources and services.
  • Ability to evaluate which resource(s) will provide the best results, efficiently and cost-effectively.
  • Experience training in research methods and applications and with creating related guides and marketing materials.
  • Ability to work as part of a virtual team. Dependable, flexible and a good team player.
  • Excellent oral/written communication and analytical skills, including the ability to problem-solve, ask questions, and prepare answers in a professional, declarative, and clear manner.
  • Committed to excellent customer service with strong interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate, follow instructions using good judgment, and work effectively with a diverse group of attorneys and staff.
  • Ability to thrive in an environment that is continuously evolving to adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Solid skills in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to create charts, graphs, and pivot tables. MS SharePoint a plus.
  • Understands the unique law firm environment, including confidentiality, sensitivity, judgment, discretion, diplomacy, courtesy, and tact in handling issues related to the firm.
  • Curiosity about technology, trends in the collective intelligence / libraries / information / knowledge management space, and the forces impacting the legal industry.
