Job Description

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides care to Advocate Heart Institute patients under the supervision of an RN, APN and/or physicians within established department policies and procedures.
    • 5)Transports specimens to the lab as necessary and within a timely manner.
    • 1)Performs EKG's and applies Event monitors, following established procedures.
    • 6)Provides for the special needs and behaviors of specific age groups served.
    • 2)Obtains and documents basic clinical patient information such as, but not limited to: vital signs, cardiac rhythm, O2 saturation, LOC, pertinent patient medical information.
    • 3)Performs venipuncture, point of care testing and peripheral IV insertion according to established hospital/system policies and procedures.
    • 4)Assists with the transport, safe patient handling and way-finding of Advocate Heart Institute and Lutheran General patients.
  • Demonstrates the ability to interact and cooperate with all customers.
    • 4)Assists with general clerical and Patient Concierge duties as assigned.
    • 5)Monitors patient and family waiting areas to provide for the customers' needs before, during and after appointment.
    • 1)Engages patients and physicians in a courteous manner and resolves patient concerns through customer service recovery actions or elevation to a charge nurse/supervisor.
    • 6)Answers phones utilizing proper phone etiquette, communicates messages and follows through as necessary based upon customer need.
    • 2)Role models behaviors supportive of cooperation and teamwork.
    • 7)Utilizes established customer service initiatives, such as AIDET, to decrease patient anxiety and provide the best customer experience.
    • 3)Supports direct communication of all members of the healthcare team. Utilizes appropriate computer applications for communication and patient tracking.
  • Maintains a safe organized and efficient work environment.
    • 1)Complies with established safety standards and infection control standards/policies.
    • 2)Maintains quality control of technical equipment according to protocol.
    • 3)Identifies equipment and supplies needed for procedures and patient care in a timely manner. Maintains set stock levels and notifies appropriate personnel when reordering required.
    • 4)Maintains clean, neat work areas.
    • 5)Utilizes computer applications to organize and provide patient care, document patient information and track patients when receiving care outside of the clinic area.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to the organization by supporting and adapting to changes consistent with operating goals.
    • 1)Acts independently in making decisions on routine daily assignments.
    • 2)Demonstrates adaptability and flexibility for change.

    • 2)Maintains credentials on required skills.


Education/Experience Required:

  • High school graduate. NCT and/or paramedic experience required. Minimum 2 years experience in direct patient care. This position will need to recognize the needs and behaviors of a variety of age groups treated, prior experience with various age groups is preferred.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Good communication and organizational skills. Basic anatomy and physiology knowledge.
  • Nursing Care Technician and/or Emergency Medical Technician certification. BCLS Certification.


Physicial Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Ability to communicate with patients. Ability to work staggered 8 hour shifts. Ability to work in fast-paced environment with established time constraints. Ability to handle multiple tasks and complete work within short timeframes. Exposed to blood and body fluids. Ability to assist patients in transfer. Ability to perform medium lifting, lifting up to 20-50 pounds occasionally and/or 10-25 pounds frequently and/or 10 pounds constantly. Ability to perform pulling and pushing activities related to patient positioning/transfer and stocking of supplies.
  • If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
