Job Function and Responsibilities

has been open to the public since 1934 and is home to more than 4,500 animals, big and small, across more than 216 acres. Brookfield Zoo Chicago has many of the same structures and facilities that it takes to run a small city including its own on-site electric generation plant. Our facilities include over 70 different structures from exhibits, to offices, to restaurants and everything in between. As a conservation organization, we need to make sure that our facilities and utilities are maintained at the highest quality and efficiency to provide safe and stable environments essential for animal welfare, the conservation of natural resources, and the safety of our guests.

This position contributes to the success of Brookfield Zoo Chicago by performing skilled and semi-skilled craftsworker duties, ensuring the work performed provides a safe environment for guests, staff and the animal collection, ensuring results are aesthetically pleasing, and ensuring exhibits and facilities are functional, in a well-maintained state, and support BZC's communication objectives.

This Assistant Craftsman position will focus on Electric, Gas, and Water. This may include, but is not limited to installing, maintenance and repair of electrical control, wiring and lighting systems; troubleshooting basic electrical, gas and plumbing issues; and gas meter calibration and repair. The hourly wage for this union position is $27.57 per hour.

The primary duties and responsibilities:

Perform skilled crafts duties with direct guidance and support from work group team members. Learn and develop proficiency of skills specific to facilities systems in electrical, plumbing and gas activities. Ensure services provided meet section standards, clients' specifications, applicable codes, standards and program goals, and is aesthetically pleasing to visitors, including routine crafts worker tasks, preventative maintenance, special repair projects, capital construction, special events, emergency/safety, special repairs, capital projects and overhead.

Perform routine maintenance and/or repair projects:

  • As assigned, perform routine inspections of exhibits and facilities. Advise manager, Lead or Asst. Lead of needed repairs and clients' requests. Assignments may be completed independently or under direct supervision until skills and knowledge proficiency has been met.
  • Advise distinct operating section staff of resource needs. Evaluate schedule and communicate pertinent information to all affected parties.
  • Ensure projects take place with least amount of encroachment on guests and animal collection.
  • Learn and ensure work group's quality control standards and ensure work performed meets established standards and specifications and complies with established quality control standards.

Perform tasks associated with the section's Standard Operating Program, including performing skilled craft duties, providing estimates, and communicating all pertinent information to managers and other concerned parties. Complete daily work order assignments and track time accordingly.

Perform assistant crafts worker tasks as assigned associated with the section's functional programs:
  • Learn to perform and perform inspection on exhibits and facilities specific to electrical, plumbing and gas systems independently.
  • Learn the difference between projects (routine, special and capital and be able to prioritize work assignments based on internal client needs or requests.
  • Perform routine repairs as directed by the manager, Lead or Asst. Lead (when the Manager or Lead are unavailable). Work may be performed independently or with supervision based on nature of work and/or skill and knowledge required to complete the work.
  • Advise manager, Lead or Asst. Lead of any resource needs. Communicate pertinent information to affected parties. Routinely inspect functional, structural and aesthetic systems in exhibits and facilities as assigned and perform minor repairs and maintenance as assigned.
  • Carry out tasks associated with the section's standard operating procedures which include, but are not limited to: equipment and shop maintenance, safety, inventory and purchasing, facility surveys, and utility locations.
Assist in controlling the section's operating budget by ensuring all allocated resources are properly and efficiently utilized.

Learn and ensure all work performed meets set standards and specifications and complies with established quality control standards. Perform duties associated with the section's overhead operating program. Accurately complete daily labor allocation sheets.

Attend and participate in meetings as assigned.

Participate in the section's emergency response and animal welfare program as assigned.

Other related duties as assigned.

Position Requirements and Specifications

The requirements for this position include the following:

  • High school diploma or (GED) equivalent required.
  • Graduate of an accredited apprenticeship program, two years' experience at a journeyman level, an Associate's degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of training and experience required.
  • Ability to read, write and perform all required math commensurate with field of responsibility.
  • Proactive, persistent and helpful. Team player.
  • Good communications and interpersonal skills.
  • Familiarity with all codes related to field.
  • Ability to perform all traditional tasks related to field. Must possess skills in related fields.
  • Cultural competency; experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.
  • Valid driver's license required at time of hire. Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois driver's license or obtain one within 90 days of hire. Valid out-of-state driver's license is required for out-of-state residents.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.
