Job Description

Leads the assigned unit at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center to maintain a secure environment to protect people, information, and property. Proactively identifies and resolves potentially harmful, dangerous, or unsafe situations or risks. Provides operational leadership of ensures that all services meet Security and Public Safety Department standards. This is a Working Supervisor position on 2nd shift - primarily Monday - Friday 3PM - 11:30PM.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides security services with professionalism, fairness, and compassion in even challenging circumstances and in accordance with policies, procedures, and training. Inspires confidence in patients, visitors, and team members by presenting a professional, approachable, and service-oriented appearance and demeanor. Is alert, observant, and ethical. Complies with and enforces all safety and security rules and regulations.
  • Oversees performance of the unit's routine and emergency responsibilities. Collaborates with staff, leadership and other departments to accomplish organizational goals, resolve security concerns, share information, monitor customer satisfaction, and provide education and training.
  • Prioritizes and assigns tasks to accommodate shifting demands and resource pressures. Confirms work documentation in the electronic record. Approves incident reports. Conducts shift briefings to ensure accurate communication and handoff.
  • Coordinates emergency response planning and practice with other Departments and Units. Ensures that after action reviews accomplished and documented.
  • Provides liaison with community police, fire, and government officials. Conducts major investigations relative to accidents, thefts, injuries and other incidents. Conducts investigation/reviews of situations that require a threat assessment.
  • Performs administrative requirements. Responsible for KRA results; provides input to and implements the budget, administers policies and procedures, conducts inspections and audits to identify vulnerabilities and hazards; corrects deficiencies identified by third party inspections, audits, and regulatory surveys; meets state and federal compliance regulations (e.g. DNV, Environment of Care chapter of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Health Care Organizations, CMS, OSHA, etc.).
  • Maintains current Department training standards in radio communications, verbal de-escalation, stabilization, CPR, application of clinical restraints, conducted energy weapon (Taser), etc.
  • Performs human resources responsibilities for staff which includes coaching on performance, completes performance reviews and overall staff morale. Recommends hiring, compensation changes, promotions, corrective action decisions, and terminations.
  • Responsible for understanding and adhering to the organization's Code of Ethical Conduct and for ensuring that personal actions, and the actions of employees supervised, comply with the policies, regulations and laws applicable to the organization's business.


Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Driver license issued by the state of Illinois, and
  • Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) Card issued by the Illinois State Police. needs to be obtained within 6 months, or
  • A valid drivers license issued by the Division of Motor Vehicles, and
  • Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) license issued by the Department of Justice (DOJ).


Education Required:

  • Associate's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field is required or obtained within an approved and agreed upon timeframe.


Experience Required:

  • Typically requires 5 years of experience in hospital security experience, security experience, law enforcement, and/or military, three of which must have been as an assigned leader, and including experiences dealing with emergent situations and identifying and resolving complex issues that pose a potential risk.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Supervisory Officer Certification (CHSS) issued by the International Association for Healthcare Security & Safety (IAHSS) must be obtained on a one-time basis within two years of appointment to this role. Recertification is not required.
  • Illinois team members must have completed State of Illinois 20-hour Basic Security Officer course; for IL sites equipped with firearms, the State of Illinois 40-hours is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise mature judgment and sound reasoning while maintaining a courteous and tactful demeanor in dealings with employees, visitors, and patients, even if they are verbally aggressive persons.
  • Demonstrated experience in quickly assessing dangerous situations and taking appropriate action.
  • Demonstrated ability in verbal and written communications.
  • Ability to use a computer to document work such (Microsoft Word, Excel, navigating a web page, and database entry).
  • Ability to work a flexible scheduling including off-shifts, weekends and holiday, as necessary.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Must sit, stand, walk, and drive throughout the workday and must lift up to 35 lbs. occasionally. Must be able to push/pull with 35 lbs of force.
  • Temperature in working environment (when outside) may vary between - 10 to 90 degrees due to seasonal changes.
  • May be exposed to mechanical, electrical, chemical, explosive, and radiation hazards. Protective clothing must be worn as necessary.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
  • Ability to defend self and/or others in case of physical confrontations.
