Job Description

General Summary:

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA), under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist (OT), assumes responsibility and accountability for a designated group of patients and provides occupational therapy treatments in accordance with best practice methods and established hospital polices and departmental procedures. The COTA and OT work as a team to regularly communicate regarding each patient's plan of care.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provides interventions to patient as indicated in the supervising OT's plan of care, using established clinical pathways and protocols for best evidenced-based practice. Seeks guidance in this area as appropriate.

  • Collaborates on effectiveness of ongoing treatment plan, collaborates with OT on instituting appropriate changes in care plan.

  • Assesses educational needs of the patient, family, caregiver and provides education to meet those needs.

  • Meets department standards for documentation, access and communication.

  • Collaborates and communicates appropriately with families, physicians, other rehabilitation staff, nurse case managers, and others within and outside the Lurie Children's system.

  • Participates in clinics, rounds, meetings, in-services, departmental process improvement projects, annual competencies, MYR and conferences, as assigned.

  • Actively engages in continued learning toward growing own knowledge. Actively participates in in services, including planning educational activities for the team as assigned.

  • Participates in supervision/instruction of students as assigned. Participates in orientation of new staff and support staff as assigned.

  • Supports organizational change initiatives, adapting to a rapidly changing health care environment.

  • Other job functions as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Successful graduation from an accredited Certified Occupational Therapy program.

  • Current License or proof of eligibility and submission for license in the State of Illinois.

  • Certification in CPR from the American Heart Association by having completed the BLS AED Heartsaver Course.

Education

Associate's Degree: Occupational Therapy (Required)

(BLS) - Basic Life Support - American Heart Association
