JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Attorney - Excluded

Chicago Police Department

Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Prosecutorial Strategies, apprise Detectives of relevant case law and statutes and assist Detectives in identifying, documenting and presenting evidence in a manner that strengthens the overall case value in court proceedings. Positions assigned to this classification are excluded from bargaining union representation based on managerial authority requirements within the labor relations act.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Provide assistance and advise from a prosecutorial perspective to Bureau of Detectives personnel for investigatory purposes.
  • Review and advise search warrants, consent to search incidents, and other matters deemed appropriate for evidenced-based investigatory purposes.
  • Establish a "pre-review" process of Bureau of Detective's major cases that include but are not limited to: relevant case law and/or statutes, guidance on producing, documenting, and presenting evidence in a manner that may strengthen overall case value in court proceedings.
  • Track cases that are deemed Continued Investigation "CI'" by the Cook County State's Attorney's Office (CCSAO) and revisit these cases with Felony Review Unit (FRU), when applicable
  • Monitor BOD case documentation including but not limited to: Original Case Incident Reports, GPRs, Supplementary Reports and Electronic Recordings of Interviews on open cases to ascertain and identify potential pre-trial motion and trial issues and investigatory opportunities.
  • Meet with Bureau of Detective's Supervisors of on a regular basis to identify patterns, trends and/or issues related to investigations that may need to be addressed.
  • Participate in regular meetings with other Bureau of Detective and inter-Bureau personnel as assigned.
  • Act as a liaison to Federal Law Enforcement Agencies (USAO, FBI, etc) on issues that affect the Bureau of Detectives.

LOCATION: One of the Five Bureau of Detectives Areas as assigned

SHIFT/HOURS: Monday-Friday / 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

THIS POSITION IS EXEMPT FROM CAREER SERVICE

Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education, Training, and Experience
  • Graduation from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school, plus three (3) years of work experience in the legal profession as a licensed attorney.
Licensure, Certification, or Other Qualifications
  • Admission to the Illinois Bar (or eligible for admission on motion to the Illinois Bar pursuant to Illinois Supreme Court Rule 705)

Disclaimer - "Accredited" means any nationally or regionally accredited college, university, or law school where the applicant is enrolled in or has completed an Associates, Bachelors, Masters, or Juris Doctorate degree program.

Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:

  • Knowledge of FOIA law
  • Experience with litigation, juvenile law, and civil procedure.
  • Familiarity with State and Federal court requirements
  • Five (5) years' experience working in law enforcement or criminal law is preferred.

This position requires applicants to complete an interview. The interviewed candidate(s) possessing the qualifications best suited to fulfill the responsibilities of the position, based on the interview will be selected.

NOTE: Candidates must pass a background investigation, drug screen and other pre-employment procedures as determined by the Chicago Police Department.
