JOB SUMMARY

The ED Tech is responsible for assisting in the provision of nursing care to patients in the Emergency Room as delegated by a Registered Nurse. Responsible for performing tasks to support unit functions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential Functions

* Demonstrates a commitment to the mission of Swedish Covenant Hospital and demonstrates a service orientation and adheres to all responsibilities and standards of the Hospital.

1.Gives direct care as delegated by a Registered Nurse:

A.Vital signs* blood pressures-manual, dinamap, Doppler, orthostatic

(1)pulse

(2)oral/rectal/tympanic temperature

(3)respiratory rate

B. Attaches cardiac monitor

C. Respiratory care*

(1)pulse oximetry

(2)obtains peak flow measurements

(3)oxygen administration - nasal cannula, venturi mask, non-rebreather mask

D. Obtains accucheck measurements*

E.Urine collections*

(1)runs UA and UCG tests

(2)inserts foley catheters

F. Wound care*

(1)sterile technique/glove application

(2)wound cleansing

(3)wound dressings - steri-strips, tube gauze, dry gauze, telfa/adaptic, silvadene, ointment application, cold sterile saline burn dressings

G. Stool collection

H. Assists with OB/GYNE care

(1)equipment set up

(2)assists MD w/ exam

(3)specimen collection/prep/transport

I. ENT care*

R. Identifies changes in patient condition and notifies RN/MD

2. Transports patients to and from the Emergency Department. Assists patients in transferring between bed, cart, or wheelchair.

3. Cleans emergency rooms, including furniture, major equipment, and carts in accordance with Emergency Department infection control guidelines after procedures and patient discharge.

4.Assists in the maintenance and care of equipment, instruments, and supplies. Keeps the store room neat and organized.

5. Orders and obtains needed supplies and equipment, i.e. IMEDS, Storeroom and Central Service items.

6. Stock supplies and linens in exam rooms according to designated Emergency Department routine. Empties full dirty linen containers each shift.

7.Participates in maintaining an environment conducive to safety, patient comfort, and privacy.

8. Participates in interdepartmental deliveries and procurement of supplies, equipment, and patient information.

9. Replaces Emergency Department secretary when none is available, and performs secretary duties during the shift as the need arises.

10. Participates as "on-site" disaster team member as indicated.

11. Participates in unit staff meetings, appropriate unit inservices, and educational opportunities. Credentialed in:

12. Prepares patient for morgue and transports.

13. Empties/discards of sharps containers appropriately.

14. Performs related duties. The above list may not be all-inclusive.

PATIENT CARE/AGE SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND QUALIFICATIONS

Must be able to assist in caring for patients of all ages, from newborn to elderly.Must be certified in adult, child and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

QUALIFICATIONS/BASIC JOB REQUIREMENTS

*High School graduate or equivalent required.

*One year EMT/Nursing Assistant (or comparable) experience preferred.

*Must have ability to interact effectively with others, ability to observe and communicate accurately.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION

*Current CPR certification by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross in adult, child, and infant CPR techniques required.

*Current certification as an EMT or Nursing Assistant onIDPH's Healthcare Worker Registryrequired.

ACCESS TO PROTECTED HEALTH INFORMATION

Computer system access for the Nursing Division is assigned based on criteria as specified in Policy # 08-113-0, and on the minimum necessary as described in this job description. Approval for level of access is given by the system administrator (for Nursing Division this is Nursing Informatics) or the department that has ownership of system/module. See computer system Access Control policy. The Emergency Tech has Access Level F which includes Name, Demographic, & Service Specific Clinical )i.e. clinical information specific to the Emergency Department). Meditech access for this job description is ER.TEC. See Policy 08-113-0, Attachment A.
