Lead Registered Nurse Infusion Center

Condell Medical Center

Full-Time Days

Job Summary:

Provides front line leadership and for Infusion Center. Supports the Supervisor of Oncology Treatment Departments as the subject matter expert for oncology infusion nursing. Furthermore, the incumbent partners with the inpatient oncology unit and system oncology infusion committees/councils to assure the department is aligned and abreast of current oncology nursing infusion practices.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Provides team leadership to the clinical staff of the Infusion Center
    • Establishes appropriate patient charges and outpatient billing through coordination with other departments. Oversees the process of data input to ensure accurate information and patient charges.
    • Collaborates with Medical Director and Oncology Manager and Pharmacy -- evaluates and monitors infusion center environment and procedures for safety to ensure a safe environment for patients, family and staff. Reconciles all Patient Safety Events with action plan reported to stakeholders -- both intradepartmental and interdepartmental.
    • Evaluates needs of infusion center and seeks appropriate equipment and resources to maintain a high level of performance.
    • Serves a superuser and resource for EMR, including everyday troubleshooting, leading upgrades, partnering with the site and system committees/councils on clinical informatics projects.
    • Initiates service recovery when needed and escalates to appropriate leadership when appropriate.
    • Leads accreditation opportunities for the Infusion Center, e.g. QOPI, COC/INCP, Magnet.
    • Onboards new staff; Provides frontline leadership support in the daily operations of the Infusion Center; Supports Oncology Treatment Department Manager in the management of staff performance including corrective action.
    • Ensures staff coverage as needed in collaboration with the Oncology Manager and other relevant leaders within the infusion center.
    • Tracks and prepares monthly statistics reports for the infusion center. Develops and reports measurable performance dashboards including action plans for opportunities for improvement.
    • Ensures adherence to all safety checks and practices related to chemotherapy and infusion administration as outlined in policies and procedures. Oversees the process of safe and effective clinical handoffs between infusion center and inpatient or other sites of care.
  • Functions as an Infusion RN to promote safety, quality and service
    • Develops and maintains a therapeutic relationship for patient care delivery.
    • Performs nursing tasks for the administration of IV chemotherapeutic drugs, biologics, fluids and medications, following policies for safe administration.
    • Follows all nursing policies and supports oncology services clinical initiatives.
    • Demonstrates the use of the nursing process as a problem-solving model, consistently making sound clinical decisions.
    • Collaborates with other Infusion Center RNs to continually develop patient education materials that are appropriate for our patient population.
    • Completes nursing competencies according to deadlines set forth by the organization.
  • Supports staff development and assists the Supervisor in managing staff performance.
    • Partners with inpatient oncology nursing leaders when needed, to promote staff development of new orientees, nurse residents and existing staff to assure oncology nursing competencies are up to date for inpatient nursing as well.
    • Promotes nursing activities such as nursing journal club, nursing research, in partnership with shared governance.
    • Develops and implements a written orientation plan for new employees and evaluates its effectiveness in making necessary modifications.
    • Assists staff in direct patient care activities for assessing, teaching and evaluating clinical skills and knowledge. Assist staff to assure quality and timely patient care is rendered.
    • Supports the Oncology Manager on monitoring and documenting staff performance, maintaining organized personnel files with necessary information to meet compliance standards, conducts performance appraisals.
    • Assures staff has opportunities to attend in-services, seminars and training courses relevant to area of clinical practice.
    • Oversees development of relevant care competency and testing according to hospital guidelines. Assures that staff competencies are up to date.
    • Partners with Pharmacy on assuring clinical staff education on relevant therapies are addressed.
    • Assists Supervisor in editing associate timecards, approving PTO requests and coordinating short- and long-term schedules.
  • Functions as oncology infusion center nursing leader and facilitator to systemwide meetings relevant to infusion services
    • Supports the service initiatives for Health Outcomes, Associate Engagement, Patient Satisfaction, Physician Satisfaction, Growth and Funding our Future goals of the Cancer Institute and Advocate Illinois Masonic and Advocate Condell Medical Center.
    • Monitors patient satisfaction through patient/family, staff and physicians. Collaborating with leadership, manages recommendations for patient resolutions.
    • Participates as oncology nursing leader at Cancer Committee, Oncology Nursing Council (system) and any other site and system level committees relevant to oncology nursing.
    • Provides infusion and Cancer Institute leadership input on industry trends, system recommendations related to nursing practice related to Infusion services.


Licensure:

  • Nurse, Registered (RN)


Education/Experience Required:

  • * BSN; Graduate of an accredited school of nursing * Board Certification, or within two years of hire
  • 3-5 years oncology related clinical experience in outpatient infusion setting
  • Prior leadership/charge experience highly preferred


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:

  • Minimum Level Qualifications * Clinically appropriate skills * Ability to cooperate and work well with others. * Basic management skills * Team building skills * Communication skills * Understanding of basic Finance * Use of Microsoft Office
  • * RN * Chemotherapy Provider certification


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • This job will be exposed to chemotherapeutic agents and immunocompromised patients. This job may require patient assistance into and out of mobilization devices. Some patients require contact precautions.
  • If position has direct patient care or direct patient contact the following lifting requirement supersedes any previous lifting requirement effective 06/01/2015. Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance. For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available. Unique patient lifting/movement situations will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
