Job Summary:

The Senior Communications Coordinator at the Buffett Institute for Global Affairs supports the communication team with execution of overall communications, including contributing to the Institute's written and digital media; maintaining the Institute's social media presence; planning and executing events logistics; updating the Institute's websites; creating e-newsletters; and promoting events and initiatives created by the Institute and affiliated faculty and programs. The Sr. Coordinator stays in regular contact with many members of the Buffett Institute community.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Writes and edits communications: Drafts Northwestern Buffett's bimonthly internal and external newsletters, curating content from Northwestern Buffett team leaders as well as affiliated programs and groups; drafts content for annual donor reports and donor updates under the supervision of Northwestern Buffett's Senior Director of Communications, Outreach and Engagement and in partnership with Northwestern's Alumni Relations and Development (ARD) team; produces stories spotlighting Northwestern Buffett webinars, events, strategic initiatives and grant recipients for Northwestern Buffett and other communications channels; maintains the Buffett Institute's social media presence and contributes to the growth of Buffett's social media followership through written and visual content creation
  • Manages Northwestern Buffett's website and digital media: Reviews and updates Northwestern Buffett's websites to keep content fresh and compelling; assists with the production of Northwestern Buffett's digital media, including photos, and oversees multi-channel dissemination; using templates, creates mini-sites for Northwestern Buffett teams or affiliated programs and groups as needed; posts stories written by communication team as well as news articles from or about affiliated faculty and/or students; follows SEO best practice and Northwestern University's digital accessibility protocols.
  • Contributes to outreach and engagement efforts: Serves as a point person for Northwestern Buffett program stakeholders-contributes to tracking how Northwestern Buffett grant recipients apply grant funds and developing stories highlighting the impact of Northwestern Buffet programs; engages in outreach to media and responding to media inquiries; supports the facilitation of Northwestern Buffett events and programs.
  • Manages Northwestern Buffett's events: Plans and executes event logistics for Buffett's virtual, hybrid and in-person events; contributes to discussion guide drafts.
  • Tracks and evaluates data: Tracks and reports on quantitative and qualitative communications team performance measures and recommends changes to improve communication strategies; contributes to updating Northwestern Buffett's CRM (Salesforce)-media and prospective external partner contacts, in particular; monitors news and conversations of relevance to Northwestern Buffett's work to identify opportunities for Northwestern Buffett to contribute to a broader public discourse.
  • Contributes to strategic communications planning: Maintains an up-to-date communications and engagement calendar that reflects Northwestern Buffett's strategic communications priorities and notes both upcoming communication activities and opportunities (e.g. conference proposal submission deadlines).
  • Supervises work-study students: Oversees the recruitment, evaluation, and selection of Buffett's communications and engagement focused work-study students and supervises work-study student activities.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in communication, marketing, new media, journalism, or the equivalent combination of education, training, and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
  • 2-3 years applicable work experience, such as communication, social media, and/or writing.

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Demonstrated experience in writing and editing content for the web and social media.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills with an eye for storytelling, style, grammar, and brevity.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Experience with a Content Management System (CMS). Able to set priorities, organize workflow, work independently on assigned projects, and collaborate in a hard-working, small-team environment, demonstrating an exceptional work ethic and following through on initiatives.
  • Rigorous attention to detail.

The target hiring range for this position will be between $60,000 - $67,000 per year. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.
