Title: Instructor, Science First Program

Exemption Status: Non-exempt

Department: School of the Chicago Botanic Garden

Reports to: Manager, Science Career Continuum

Seasonal Full-time, mid-May 2024 for approximately 10 weeks

Supervises: Students in the Science First Program

Position Overview:

The Science First Program seeks a passionate STEM instructor to co-deliver a transformative summer experience for 20 middle school students (grades 7-10) from CPS at the Chicago Botanic Garden. This seven-week program, running from June to August, immerses students in the wonders of environmental science through engaging hands-on learning. Collaboratively, you'll design and implement an interactive curriculum that emphasizes outdoor field investigations, collaborative research projects, and environmental justice, fostering a connection with the natural world and preparing them for future academic success. You'll play a pivotal role in empowering traditionally underrepresented youth to explore STEM fields through educational play and research. Students attend Monday-Friday, 9am-3pm, and receive a stipend and transportation to the garden. Join us in shaping the next generation of environmental stewards!

Responsibilities:

Curriculum and Instruction:

  • Collaborate with a co-instructor to design and deliver an engaging, standards-aligned curriculum centered on environmental justice, environmental science, and scientific research, tailored to middle/early high school learners. The Programs theme this year is Farm to table.
  • Guide students through collaborative research projects culminating in public presentations, empowering them to communicate their findings effectively.

Assessment and Evaluation:

  • Administer and analyze pre- and post-program assessments to measure student learning and program effectiveness.
  • Contribute to continuous program improvement through active participation in quality assessments.

Outdoor Learning and Field Trip Leadership:

  • Plan and lead engaging and educational outdoor field investigations aligned with program goals and curriculum themes.
  • Develop student-centered activities and discussion prompts based on specific field trip locations and learning objectives.
  • Supervise and guide students during field trips, ensuring safety, participation, and adherence to program guidelines.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of one year of science teaching experience in formal or informal educational settings with high school-aged students.

  • Bachelor's degree required in environmental science, biology, or a related field.

  • Demonstrated understanding of student development theory with a focus on first-generation, low-income, and students of color.

  • Proven ability to integrate STEM concepts into lesson plans and develop culturally responsive curriculum.

  • Strong administrative skills, including data management, organization, and task completion.

  • Fluency in Spanish desirable but not required.


Physical Demands:

The position involves a dynamic work environment encompassing both indoor and outdoor settings. It requires regular physical activity such as standing, walking, and bending, along with strong communication skills (listening and speaking) and proficiency in operating standard office equipment (computers, phones, copiers, scanners, and fax machines). Occasional lifting, pushing, or pulling of items under 30 pounds may be necessary.
