Job Description

Cleveland-Cliff Steel has an immediate opportunity for an Environmental Engineer in our Environmental department, at our Indiana Harbor operation in East Chicago, Indiana. This position is an important technical part of the team, with a focus on corrective actions, technical/system problem solving, as well as compliance system development. The Indiana Harbor combined operating source includes Ironmaking and raw material facilities (IH7 Blast Furnaces, and Pulverized Coal), Steel Producing and support facilities (3SP, 4SP, Slab Dimensioning, PLR, and Lime Plant), hot strip, and finishing operations. Summary of Responsibilities:

  • Assist with implementation of air programs to ensure compliance with applicable environmental laws, regulations, and permit requirements.
  • Assist with completion and timely submittal of environmental reports for federal and State agencies and general environmental performance statistics.
  • Perform root cause analyses with operating department personnel and identify effective corrective actions for environmental issues to improve compliance and advance superior environmental performance.
  • Represent the facility during regulatory air inspections, replying to agency inquiries, and collecting and submitting requested compliance information.
  • Coordinate stack testing program including CEMS and COMS and their associated quality assurance testing.
  • Coordinate air compliance assessment program including visible emission observations and compliance data collection and evaluation.
  • Cooperate in Corporate environmental compliance audits.
  • Assist with preparation of Title V air permit applications as required.
  • Translate air permit requirements into plant operating guidelines, and train management and operating personnel in compliance requirements.
  • Support plant operations periodically for weekend duty and emergency situations.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or equivalent work experience.
  • Ability to work self-directed, prioritize work and handle multiple projects.
  • Possess excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Adept at communication with regulatory agency personnel, site managers, corporate resources, legal counsel, and other interested stakeholders.
  • Familiarization with ISO 14001:2015 Standards.
  • Proficient in MS Office products.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three (3) - five (5) years of environmental experience.
  • Familiarity with steel industry or heavy industrial operations.
  • Degreed engineer, preferable Chemical or Environmental engineer, EIT or certified PE a plus.
  • Current working knowledge of various State and Federal environmental Laws and regulations applicable to operations a plus.
  • Possess a strong background in operational compliance, including understanding of air sources, air pollution control technologies and actively interacting with facility functions such as operations, maintenance, instrumentation, and engineering to assist in solving emission control problems including participation in the procurement processes for the selection of air pollution control devices and/or services.
  • Advanced knowledge in Clean Air Act requirements including but not limited to NSR permitting, Title V permitting, requirements under the New Source Performance Standards, National Emissions Standard for Hazardous Air Pollutants and Greenhouse Gas regulations.
  • Working knowledge of CEMS (Continuous Emissions Monitoring Systems), COMS (Continuous Opacity Monitor Systems) and (RATA) Relative Accuracy Test Audits including ability to partner closely with third-party contractors to complete required quarterly and yearly audits.
