Target hiring range for this position will be between $19.31 to $27.16 per hour. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data.

Job Summary:

Conducts experimental research lab work and/or assists in design of one or more specific phase(s) of entire project(s). May complete mathematical calculations, and/or computer tasks and/or assist in judging validity of data. May complete biological experiments elucidating the effects of the tumor microenvironment on t cells. Follows appropriate protocols, policies, procedures, regulations, Good Clinical and Good Laboratory Practices.

We are an energetic, diverse team of intelligent passionate scientists dedicated to trying to cure cancer. In particular, we are interested in utilizing genomics, human and animal models, and immunology to identify novel cures for skin cancer. Our particular focus has been on analyzing whole genome sequencing data, identifying cancer mutations, and then seeing how mutations in T cell cancers contribute to lymphomagenesis. We are looking for talented, motivated students who are interested in learning molecular biology, statistics, and cancer biology. Previous experience in molecular biology, computer programming, or animal experiments are desired but can be taught. The position is perfect for students who are interested in doing biomedical translational research before applying to medical or graduate school. Mentorship is a personal interest of Dr. Choi's, and previous students have gone on to medical school at Cornell, Hofstra, Emory and graduate school at Yale.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Following protocols, designs, sets-up and conducts basic experiments.
  • Analyzes and troubleshoots protocols and data obtained from individual experiments and recommends alternatives and suggestions to improve processes, validity and/or accuracy.
  • Analyze genomic data to identify causative molecular changes in cancer.
  • Using a fully functioning level of skill, completes the following activities (please highlight):
    • Cellular Biology:
      • Cell culture, cell isolation
      • Functional studies
      • Transfection
    • Animal:
      • Husbandry
      • Breeding and screening transgenic mice
      • Dissections
      • Blood collection
      • Surgical procedures
      • Database management of colony

Administration

  • Maintains detailed records of results which may include collecting, extracting & entering data.
  • Manipulates, interprets &/or presents results.
  • Prepares charts & graphs for presentations & publications.
  • Performs scientific literature searches in support of research.
  • Completes portions of grant applications, manuscripts & publications.
  • Utilize unix to maintain genomic data
  • Manipulates, interprets, and presents results

Finance

  • Orders &/or maintains inventory of reagent, mice &/or lab supplies.

Supervises

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in a scientific major or related; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.

Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)

  • Demonstrated ability to follow detailed instruction as required by research protocols
  • Attention to detail and accurate record keeping
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with UNIX, Python, and R.
  • Familiarity with genetics and molecular biology
