This is a key role in the Respiratory Services Department at Lutheran General Hospital; this person manages the clinical and administrative functions of Respiratory Services, Pulmonary Function Testing, Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and the Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment Center at Lutheran General Hospital.

Major Responsibilities:

Serves as chief retention officer.

  • Assists with the development and implementation of progressive disciplinary action.

  • Reviews new employee applications.

  • Coordinates interview process through Human Resources Department.

  • Assures that a coordinated departmental orientation is completed specific to Lutheran General with assistance from the appropriate Supervisor and Clinical Specialists.

  • Reviews the completion of the new employee orientation.

Coordinates and directs the day-to-day activities of the section, for Lutheran General, making and/or delegating decisions for those activities.

  • Identifies patient care workload within the department. Determines procedure workload and level of patient acuity for patients in Lutheran General. Oversees staffing to assure the efficient utilization and allocation of personnel to facilitate patient care needs at Lutheran General.

  • Manages a supportive response to changes in patient workload and acuity variations (e.g., ambulance transports, hyperbaric treatments) with proper reallocation and flexing of staff.

  • Assures the availability of credentialed staff members to support specialty care areas in Lutheran General.

Monitors the performance of the Respiratory Care department in the delivery of patient care services at Lutheran General.

  • Monitors quality of patient care, assessing appropriateness and efficacy of care delivery, responsiveness, and competency assessment of the practitioner.

  • Develops and monitors quality indicators to support departmental quality assurance programs for Lutheran General.

  • Investigates and reports upon safety concerns.

  • Initiates a process for counseling employees in which either a performance deficiency or behavioral concern has developed.

  • Completes an annual review of direct reports' performance, identifying a growth plan to support development.

  • Develops and monitors Respiratory Care departmental revenue and expense budget performance in Lutheran General. Develops requests for support capital equipment needs.

  • Evaluates and communicates departmental financial performance to both senior level management and respiratory care management.

Identifies opportunities for process improvement.

  • Supports these efforts by attending multi-disciplinary team meetings. Implements a change process through effective communication to staff practitioners. Monitors the adherence to a change in process and its effects on process improvement.

  • Represents Respiratory Care Services on Lutheran General hospital committees.

  • Participates in hospital planning and marketing strategies for Lutheran General as they relate to departmental activities and program development.

  • Develops, communicates, and implements new programs, policies, and procedures.

  • Fosters an environment of clinical excellence.

Ensures Respiratory Care Services meets or exceeds all codes and standards set by accreditation, licensure, and governing agencies.

  • Assures compliance with regulatory and public health agency standards.

  • Reviews and updates departmental policies and procedures on a regular basis.

  • Maintains current knowledge of legal regulations and trends as they relate to patient care.

  • Assures that annual competency assessments are completed.

  • Assists with departmental continuing education through shift in-services and regularly scheduled shift/department meetings.

Licensure, Registration, and/or Certification Required:

  • Current license in State of Illinois (Respiratory)

  • Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioner by IDFPR if RCP

  • Registered Respiratory Therapist by NBRC if RRT
