POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Youth Program Counselor

LOCATION/DEPT: Tri-City / St. Charles Corps

REPORTS TO: Youth Program Coordinator

FLSA CATEGORY: Non-Exempt

STATUS TYPE: TFT

OUTCOMES

Assists with and participates in the activities of the after-school program and summer day camp of the Tri-City Corps. With Youth Program Coordinator, provides supervision and leadership of youth programs, including character-building and spiritual development. The position will require collaborative efforts with parents, staff, youth leaders, and Corps Officers. Represents The Salvation Army in the community through various outreach events.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Youth Programming (75%)

  • Assist with all activities of the after-school program and summer day camp, including field trips.
  • Provide supervision for after-school program and summer day camp participants.
  • Lead assigned activities related to after-school program and summer day camp.
  • Provide safe transportation and supervision of program participants from school and/or during all field trips using Salvation Army vehicles.
  • Maintain program area in reasonable order ensuring rooms are set up for programs and cleaned when janitorial staff are not available.
  • Participate in regular training and program growth opportunities for staff.
  • Ensure all participants follow all Safe-From-Harm.
  • Assist with special events and outreach opportunities for youth and families of the corps and the wider community.
  • Assist with youth outreach programming for 6th through 12th grade, including but not limited to youth programs, character building, music groups, and special events.
  • Ensure that meals/snacks are prepared and provided for program participants following ANSI standards.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Administrative Duties (25%)

  • Maintain accurate check-in and sign-out logs for after-school program and summer day camp using approved policies.
  • Assist with planning of after-school program and summer day camp activities, taking leadership when appropriate.
  • Attend and participate in parent meetings at least twice a year.
  • Follow all Safe-From-Harm policies and ensure proper and timely reporting as needed.
  • Participate in regular Safe-From-Harm training.
  • Complete all State of Illinois required training, including sexual harassment training and mandated reporter.
  • Obtain CPR training for Adult, Child, and Infant within 3 months of hire.
  • ANSI food handler certification, or willingness to complete within 3 months of hire.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

Under the general supervision of the Youth Program Coordinator with minimal freedom to plan, schedule, and carry out responsibilities within established policies and guidelines.

The position supervises the afterschool and summer day camp participants.

In contacts related to this position's duty, this individual acts as a representative of The Salvation Army and its mission in and outside of the community.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved as well as the timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.

A 30, 60, and 90-day performance review will be conducted.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Experience in youth work preferred.
  • Valid driver's license and MVR clearance required.

  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative and be a self-starter.

POSITION LIMITATIONS

  • This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.
  • This individual will keep the Youth Program Coordinator informed on all critical issues relating to their area of responsibility.
  • This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position is required to do moderate physical work and must be able to lift 25 pounds.
  • In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to use a computer and other office equipment, recreational equipment, and operate a vehicle.
  • The work environment for this position includes an office and gym environment with a low to high noise level.
  • Must be able to walk stairs and operate a vehicle. May need to drive in inclement weather and spend a lot of time on their feet.
  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters and maintains positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
