Job Description

The Anesthesiology Manager of Research Operations will provide administrative leadership and operational management for clinical research services within the Department of Anesthesiology. The responsibility will include management of the Department research portfolio, including management of Departmental research projects, interdepartmental collaboration as well as multidisciplinary/multi-institutional collaborations in conjunction with Stanley Manne Children's Research Institute. This position supports a culture of compliance in research within the Department, consultation with the Office of Sponsored Programs, Institutional Review Board, and other key constituents throughout the Hospital and Research Institute.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Leads and supervises the staff within the research services core of the Department of Anesthesiology in partnership with the Division Administrator, Division Heads, and Faculty.

  • Attends research meetings of regular cadence with faculty engaged in research to discuss feasibility of proposed studies and appropriate study design and assess progress with ongoing research studies.

  • Collaborates with departmental leadership and other key stakeholders to develop and implement a strategic vision and goals and objectives that align with the research programs in the research institute.

  • Manages existing funds, including philanthropic funds and external research funds, associated with the Divisions' research programs, Stanley Manne Research Institute, Lurie Children's Foundation, and Finance in setting up of new grants and ongoing management.

  • Works in conjunction with Stanley Manne Children's Research institute to develop and oversee all contractual arrangements, collaborates with outside partners and Lurie Children's administrative departments on the creation of work plans, contracts, memoranda of understanding, letters of agreement, job descriptions, etc.

  • Partners with Fellowship Directors to ensure fellows are well-supported in their annual research projects.This includes consulting with the faculty overseeing education on how to conduct research and support research projects.

  • Explore and disseminate available society, industry and national grant funding opportunities that fit faculty interests.

  • Works with Stanley Mane's Children's Research Institute resources/ the Research Grants Specialist on development of new grant proposals and provides guidance as needed for pre and post award documents and reports.

  • Collaborates with the Research Coordinator who facilities clinical research efforts within the Department and supports basic science research programs.

  • Oversees medical student engagement in research within the Department and HR processes, including recruitment, onboarding, evaluation, and tracking of research coordinators within the Department of Anesthesiology.

  • Serves as a liaison to other Stanley Manne Children's Research Institute/Lurie Children's administrative departments (e.g. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago Foundation, Institutional Review Board, Accounting, Office of Sponsored Programs, Human Relations, etc.) Oversees compliance and safety in clinical trials, prepares for and leads audits, and participates in discussion with regulatory authorities as necessary.

  • Assume other operations, financial, personnel and administrative responsibilities as assigned by the Director, OCCT (Office of Clinical and Community Trials), Division Administrators, Division Heads, or Research Faculty.

  • Performance evaluations of staff within the Department of Anesthesia Research Services Core. Other job functions as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • Five or more years of experience with progressive research administration leadership.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage simultaneous project plans, personnel, and budgets.

  • Strong analytical, interpersonal, and oral and written communication skills required.

  • Experience independently planning and managing projects; diligence; ability to establish priorities and react promptly to a large variety of requests and needs.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze issues and formulate and implement action plans.

  • Must be self-directed, with an in-depth understanding of the organizational goals.

  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills. Ability to lead in a collaborative and facilitative style.

  • Solution orientated with proven record of managing large scale research projects with diverse complexity required.

  • Ability to quickly reason with information to solve new, unfamiliar problems or independent of any prior knowledge.

  • Exceptional ability to distill complex compliance issues so it is understandable to the lay audience required.

  • Ability to handle high volume of work with changing priorities and deadlines required.

  • Personal computer skills; functional experience with integrated software systems and proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

  • Strong working knowledge and skills in EPIC, Redcap, Workday, and other standard research databases.

Preferred Experience:

  • Master's degree preferred and/or certification through Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP), or Society of Clinical Research Associates (SOCRA), Certified Research Administrator (CRA)/Certified Financial Research Administrator (CFRA) preferred.

  • Research administration leadership: experience in clinical research preferred.

  • High degree of initiative and creativity preferred.
