Job Function and Responsibilities

This is a temporary full-time union role with an hourly rate of $28.39. A comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, 401(k), paid personal days, sick days, and holidays.

The Craftsworker Aide position in the Paint Shop requires general understanding and work experience/training as a painter. Experience in set design, painting murals, scenic painting, or customized painting is a plus. Painting projects can range from large scale side of a building/outdoor facades to indoor office spaces and door frames, to intricate exhibit painting of murals/rocks/trees to look like naturalistic scenes/objects. Painters work with different types of paint and mediums/materials such as epoxy, meshing, or rebar to custom fabricate exhibit features such as fake or artificial plants, rocks, or animal feeders. They may also use fiber glass to patch and repair pool decks or to build specific objects; pressure wash surfaces, repair concrete or do caulking to prep surfaces for painting.

The Craftsworker Aide in the Paint Shop contributes to the success of Brookfield Zoo Chicago ("BZC") by performing skilled and semi-skilled craftsworker duties throughout the park maintain and improve BZC's physical facilities in support of BZC's goals to be financial sustainable, provide a safe, enjoyable, and aesthetically pleasing experience for guests, to assure satisfactory physical environments for the animals, and satisfactory workspaces for staff. Ensures exhibits and facilities are functional, in a well-maintained state, and support BZC's communication objectives.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. *Perform skilled and semi-skilled crafts duties throughout the park with direct guidance. Assure work performed meets section standards, client specifications, applicable codes and standards, and program goals and is aesthetically pleasing to guests. This includes routine craftsworker tasks, as well as those associated with preventative maintenance, special repair projects, capital construction, special events, emergency and safety, unanticipated special repairs, unanticipated capital projects and overhead as directed. Establish and maintain positive and productive relationships and work cooperatively with peers, managers, and clients.
  2. *Adhere to operating section's established quality control standards. Ensure all work performed meets set standards and specifications and complies with established quality control standards.
  3. *Perform duties associated with the section's overhead operating program including utilizing the work order system to track completion of work order assignments and associated labor hours.
  4. *Follow the section's established Standard Operating Procedures and carry out associated tasks, as directed, including equipment and shop maintenance, inventory and purchasing.
  5. *Participate in the section's emergency response and animal welfare programs as assigned.
  6. Other related duties as assigned.

Position Requirements and Specifications

The requirements for this position include the following:

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent required.
  • Participation in a relevant, accredited training program or 1-2 years relevant experience at the journeyperson level in work group field.
  • Ability to read, write and perform all required math commensurate with field of responsibility.
  • Must be able to perform all tasks related to field and possess skills in related fields.
  • May require specialty training, certifications, licenses and/or experience in a specific skill area(s) depending on the position or work assignment, such as, but not limited to: carpentry, painting, welding, plumbing, HVAC, electric/water/gas, and/or life support systems.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented fashion.
  • Good communications and interpersonal skills.
  • English fluency at a professional working proficiency.
  • Cultural competency; experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.
  • Valid driver's license required at time of hire. Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois driver's license or obtain one within 90 days of hire. Valid out-of-state driver's license is required for out-of-state residents.

DESIRABLE/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Familiarity with relevant codes related to field preferred.
  • Spanish fluency a plus, but not required.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Incumbent is expected to learn BZC's mission and Exhibits and Facilities operating goals. Must become familiar with Exhibits program section operating program standards. Must represent BZC in a professional manner at all times.

This is a temporary position.

Schedule Details

Typical work schedule is Monday - Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m; includes a 30-minute unpaid lunch and two paid 15 minute breaks. This union position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement of Teamsters local 727.
