POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Day Camp Counselor

LOCATION/DEPT: Mayfair Corps

REPORTS TO: Day Camp Director

FLSA CATEGORY: Non-Exempt

STATUS TYPE: TFT/TPT

OUTCOMES

To provide teaching, leadership, and supervision of day campers at summer Day Camp. To assist day camp director for leadership in future Day Camps.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Will use the Youth Developmental Assets to track outcomes and develop program goals.
  2. To understand that Day Camp will have a Christian emphasis.
  3. Direct group of 12 children in a manner that promotes safe behaviors and improves the quality of the children's interaction with one another.
  4. Organizes and leads large groups of children for various activities. (Art, Gym, Games, Worship) Leads and participates in all activities with their groups, making camp fun for their campers, teaching skills, providing encouragement and support, etc.
  5. Supervises and monitors during drop off/pick up times and free times.
  6. Serves as a role model by demonstrating high standards of personal conduct.
  7. Responsible for camper's safety on bus, on a trip, or at any activity. Reports any accident to Day Camp Director and proper staff.
  8. Follow administrative notices defining camp procedures and routines.
  9. Takes accurate attendance of campers daily.
  10. Responsible for clean-up of classroom, cafe, gym, and activity room.
  11. Other duties as assigned.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

The Day Camp Counselor will report to the Day Camp Director and work in direct relationship to the Corps Officers to ensure that all programs are in keeping with the goals, direction, and vision of the corps.

Under the direct supervision of the Day Camp Director. In the absence of the Director, to be under the supervision of the Corps officers.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as the timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • High school diploma or GED certificate required.
  • A degree within the field of Education preferable.
  • Experience working with children.
  • At least one year of experience in Christian youth work.

COMPETENCIES

  • Be available in the summer for the entire day camp program.
  • The ability to relate and minister to children as a teacher/mentor.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible in light of changing job priorities.
  • A strong personal conviction of the mission of The Salvation Army.

POSITION LIMITATIONS

  • This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.
  • This individual will keep the Day Camp Director informed on all critical issues relating to their area of responsibility.
  • This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position is required to do moderate physical work and must be able to lift 10 pounds.
  • In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to sit for lengthy periods of time; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear.
  • The employee is infrequently required to walk, stoop, kneel or crouch; but frequently required to reach with and use arms and hands, as required in using standard office equipment and a PC.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and ability to focus.
  • The work environment for this position includes indoor and outdoor environments with a low to high noise level. Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters and maintains positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This would include but not be limited to such actions: resolution of conflicts in a positive manner; courteous treatment of staff, clients, and visitors; respect of others' property and person, professional and appropriate communication to and about co-workers, supervisors, and subordinates.
