POSITION DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Day Camp Director

LOCATION/DEPT: Mayfair Corps

REPORTS TO: Corps Officers

FLSA CATEGORY: Non-Exempt

STATUS TYPE: TFT

OUTCOMES

Coordinate and supervise the Day Camp of The Salvation Army Mayfair Corps providing a safe, educational, and fun environment for program participants. Must be willing to support all goals of The Salvation Army and its mission statement. Must feel comfortable in sharing the Christian Faith and in leading and participating in Christian education and evangelistic outreach programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Will use the Youth Developmental Assets to track outcomes and develop program goals.
  2. Carry out the orientation of staff members prior to the first day of camp, conduct daily staff meetings and debriefing.
  3. Plan and execute the day camp program for the entire weekly sessions.
  4. Responsible for the safety and well-being of all campers and staff throughout the camp program.
  5. Abide by all policies, procedures as well as standards set forth by The Salvation Army.
  6. Complete Safe-From-Harm training and maintain Safe-From-Harm guidelines for working with children.
  7. Supervision of campers and counselors during all water activities and specialty programs.
  8. Understand and uphold that Day Camp overall will have a Christian emphasis.
  9. Evaluation of the camp program with weekly evaluations and by gaining feedback from parents and campers weekly.
  10. Coordinate opening and closing times for each day.
  11. Prepare flyers each week to communicate with parents.
  12. Maintain visibility during check-in and check-out to help parents and campers.
  13. Maintain all paperwork pertinent to the job.
  14. Responsible for discipline action plan for day campers, if necessary, in association with the Corps Officer.
  15. Supervise all Day Camp staff and execute disciplinary action, if necessary, in association with the Corps Officer
  16. Other duties as assigned.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

This individual relates to, and interacts with, a wide range of contacts both within and outside The Salvation Army. In these contacts, they act as a representative of the Army and its mission.

Under the general supervision of the Corps Officer with some freedom to plan, schedule and carry out responsibilities within established policies and guidelines.

Supervises staff and volunteers involved in Day Camp.

PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS

This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as the timeliness, accuracy, and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.

EDUCATION/ EXPERIENCE

  • Must have completed at least 2 years of college or at least 2 years of experience in day camping, preferably in a supervisory capacity.
  • Must be 21 years of age.

COMPETENCIES

  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong leadership skills.
  • Understand and uphold that Day Camp overall will have a Christian emphasis.
  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative and be a self-starter.
  • Requires valid driver's license and pass the MVR check.
  • Attention to detail.
  • A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible in light of changing job situations/priorities.
  • A commitment to the mission of The Salvation Army.

POSITION LIMITATIONS

  • This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.
  • This individual will keep the Corps Officer informed on all critical issues relating to their area of responsibility.
  • This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • This position is required to do moderate physical work and must be able to lift 10 pounds.
  • Perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to remain stationary for some periods of time; use hands and fingers; communicate; move; occasionally required to position self to stoop, kneel, or crouch; frequently required to reach with and use arms and hands, as required in using standard office equipment and PC.
  • The work environment for this position includes indoor and outdoor environments with a low to high noise level.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision, distance vision, and ability to focus.
  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters and maintains positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This would include but not be limited to such actions: resolution of conflicts in a positive manner; courteous treatment of staff, clients, and visitors; respect of others' property and person, professional and appropriate communication to and about co-workers, supervisors, and subordinates.
