Description:

The Clinic Nurse is accountable for delivering patient care as delegated by and under the direction of a physician and genetic counselors. The Clinic Nurse is responsible for delivering patient care under a physician's and genetic counselors' direction. They provide direct patient care to improve outcomes and integrate various nursing standards into clinical practice. The Clinic Nurse also functions as a care coordinator, administrator, educator, program liaison, and advocate to ensure efficient operations and high-quality care for Cancer Prevention and Cancer Genetics Programs. Additionally, they support the Cancer Survivorship Program by providing compassionate care and delivering diagnostic tests and lab results.

Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Functions as a care coordinator, administrator, educator, program liaison for patients and referring providers, and advocate to ensure that the Cancer Prevention and Cancer Genetics Program operates efficiently, delivers high-quality care, and meets the complex needs of our patient population.
  • Provide support for the Cancer Survivorship Program which provides high-quality care to cancer survivors and will be able to respond professionally to their challenges.
  • Bridge gaps in the care continuum to facilitate timely access to high-quality, specialized cancer prevention and genetics services and risk-adapted cancer screening and prevention programs for patients with increased cancer risk.
  • Develops, implements, and updates the patient's plan of care based on ongoing assessment of the patient and input from the patient's family.
  • Assists with patient teaching and facilitates appointments, including those made with diagnostic areas, specialty physicians, and support services.
  • Provide resources and assistance accessing clinical and supportive care services offered within UI Health and the community.
  • Provide compassionate care and delivery of diagnostic tests and lab results, comprehensive intake information relating to cancer care, treatment plans, and follow-up care.
  • Provide information and assistance with supportive services and care coordination among multidisciplinary providers.
  • Utilizing nursing care to manage and update cancer risk care plans for patients at high risk for cancer or genetic mutations.
  • Utilizing evidenced-based nursing care to provide appropriate triage services to cancer survivors and inform physicians of patient concerns and documents in the electronic medical record.
  • Work with genetic counselors to coordinate testing and disclose test results and document in patient EMR. Assisting with hereditary cancer program quality improvement projects at UIH and Mile Square sites. Shares information and collaborates with other members of the health care team to promote effective patient care.
  • Verifies and implements orders from the physician, genetic counselors, physician assistant, and/or advanced practice nurse by performing interventions as prescribed by the provider and documenting accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Engages and obtains information from patients and/or family to develop an appropriate patient educational plan.
  • Recognizes symptoms, establishes priorities, and responds to patient's changing needs.
  • Completes required orientation program and unit-specific competencies.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications Required:

    1. Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois.
    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between patients, families, and health care providers.
    • Ability to work well independently and collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams and community.
    • Strong problem-solving skills.
    • Excellent customer service skills.
    • Strong preference for bilingual Spanish-speaking/reading/writing skills.
