PURPOSE OF POSITION:

CPKC's Internal Audit (IA) department is seeking an Internal Audit Manager to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity to join an iconic company with an Internal Audit function that is on a journey to progressing and modernizing. This position is an integral part of the IA team and a leader in managing independent, objective internal audits throughout the organization in accordance with The Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Standards. You will learn CPKC's business and will gain exposure to various business functions including Finance, Strategy, Technology and Marketing, with a specific focus on Operations. You will be responsible for identifying areas of improvement, ensuring regulatory compliance, and safeguarding company assets. Your work will contribute to enhancing the overall operational performance and risk management at CPKC. You will build relationships with senior leaders and hone your communication and leadership skills. This position can be based in Calgary, AB or Kansas City, MO.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Contribute to the strategic direction of CPKC's Internal Audit function and in the development and execution of railroad operations audit and advisory programs
  • Under the direction of IA leadership, manage the planning, fieldwork and reporting phases of assigned audits by leading teams in performing risk assessments, developing audit scope and objectives, designing and executing audit programs, and documenting/presenting audit observations and recommendations
  • Review the work of team members and offer suggestions for improvement. Provide on-the-job coaching to team members so that high-quality audit activities are performed and documented as per IIA and department standards, while delivering audit projects on time and within budget.
  • Participate in the audit risk assessment activities and assist in the development of the annual Internal Audit plan
  • Build and maintain relationships with business partners at all levels. Provide advice and share knowledge with these business partners to strengthen governance, risk management and compliance activities and to improve processes efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Obtain and demonstrate an understanding of the complex systems, processes, risks and controls that are relevant to the various business units across the organization and its subsidiaries
  • Leverage data, analytics and available tools to enhance audit coverage and add value to the business
  • Summarize audit observations and develop practical recommendations. Review and/or draft audit reports that effectively communicate audit observations and recommendations to both technical and non-technical audiences, including the Audit and Finance Committee.
  • Manage the budgets and timelines of assigned projects, and provide regular status updates to IA leadership
  • Manage the tracking of results from prior audits and determine if appropriate corrective action has been taken regarding significant risks or concerns

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college, preferably in a job related major field of study, such as business, logistics, accounting, or finance
  • One or more professional certifications such as Chartered Professional Accountant / Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), or similar certifications
  • Minimum five years of audit, compliance, risk management, and/or railroad operations experience
  • Experience leading or managing internal or external audits
  • Strong operations experience in the railroad industry or other transportation-related industries such as airlines, trucking, marine, logistics, etc.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision within set deadlines, possessing a high attention to detail and commitment to deliver results
  • Proficient computer skills (including word processing, spreadsheets, flowcharting, data analytics and presentation tools) to perform and monitor assigned projects
  • Strong analytical skills (qualitative and quantitative) to examine complex data/information and process it into meaningful conclusions

Management Conductor Program:

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
