Under the direction of and coordination with the Director, Emergency Services and in coordination with the Medical Director, the manager will provide administrative supervision and manage the Physician Assistants/Nurse Practitioners for all sites (York St. Chapel St., & Shoreline Medical Center) . The Manager will work clinically as needed to supplement the activities of the other PAs/NPs. Duties include but are not limited to: personnel hiring and dismissal, new hire orientation, performance management and scheduling and staffing of personnel.

Responsibilities

  • 1. In conjunction with the Director of Emergency Services and Medical Director, develops, maintains and improves a work environment that is patient focused and meets the needs of staff and referring physicians. Meets regularly with the Director of Emergency Services and Medical Director. Provides supervision and management for all PAs and NPs. Assesses and resolves operational issues regarding the Service. Meet regularly with the PAs/NPs to address issues of common concern. Establishes, implements and maintains practice staffing patterns to meet patient care standards. Completes or oversees the completion of personnel schedules. Coordinates payroll with the Executive Assistant and leads for each site. In conjunction with Human Resources, monitors compensation of mid-levels nationally and locally and ensures, and adjusts as necessary, appropriate compensation for PA and NP staff employed by YNHH. Plans and coordinates the recruiting of all PA/NP staff, including the development of job descriptions, advertising, conducting candidate interviews, and ensures timely credentialing. Performs or assists in the administering of performance appraisals and review of employee job performance. Maintain individual employee files for PAs/NPs with all personnel matter records. Responsible for PA/NP disciplinary matters, when appropriate in collaboration with executive clinical leadership.
  • 2. Assures PA/NP compliance with HIPAA, regulatory and accreditation standards Assures timely credentialing and re-credentialing of PAs/NPs by the Medical Staff Office in compliance with Medical Staff By-laws and Rules and Regulation Trains and mentors newly hired PAs/NPs and establishes a clear schedule. Educates new employees about the team structure and the respective roles and expectations for PAs/NPs. Provides new employees with formal training of their daily responsibilities including: documentation, sign out duties, computer training, calling consults, and other logistics of working in a large tertiary care facility. Encourages the professional development of staff to achieve their highest level of excellence for their position. Maintains the employment status and salary for all direct reports in Lawson's Manager Self Service system in accordance with standards and with support from the executive assistant. Maintains and tracks discretionary budget expenditure for each PA/NP in conjunction with the Director of Emergency Services, assuring that the budget is not exceeded.
  • 3. Acts as a liaison with Human Resources to resolve employee problems, questions and concerns related to their benefits. In conjunction with the Director of Emergency Services and Medical Director, defines vision for the evolution of the service, staffing and budgets to meet organizational targets. Assists the Director of Emergency Services and Medical Director,in the planning and development of future goals and responsibilities of the Service. Attends all YNHH management meetings. Assists PAs/NPs and MDs to become credentialed/proficient with procedures. Provides initial training and introduction to invasive procedures, including paracentesis, thoracentesis, lumbar puncture and central venous access, which includes reviewing the techniques required and hands on training with the specific kits used at YNHH. Supervises PAs/NPs and MDs during the first five of each of the above procedures and signs paperwork for privileging. Provides direct assistance to credentialed employees needing help with difficult procedures.
  • 4. Meets regularly on a scheduled basis with other staff regarding working relationships with our team (for example: nursing managers, day and night time nurses, care coordinators, business associates and pharmacy). Serves as a resource and contact person for the above mentioned staff. Helps to foster a positive working relationship with resident services. Provides welcome address and education about our team to the interns. Serves as a clinical resource for residents in the emergency department. Meets with the Chief Residents about relationships with the resident services. Works on patient satisfaction initiatives within the team. Implements measures to aid in patient satisfaction. Identifies and conducts Service-specific performance improvement initiatives. Responds to patient complaints and patient satisfaction concerns. Identifies and communicates physician and mid-level continuing medical education opportunities to help ensure that YNHH medical staff credentialing requirements are met. Identifies information needs of team members, patients and families. Provides related teaching and education to unit nurses and PA students from the Yale University School of Medicine Physician Associate Program.
  • 5. Acts as a role model/preceptor for PA students. Maximizes opportunities in the clinical setting for informal education of staff, patients, and families.
  • 6. Identifies self in EPIC as primary coverage person for assigned patients. Identifies self to assigned patients and their families as the PA responsible for their care. Performs necessary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, as credentialed by Yale-New Haven Hospital Office of Physician Services or under the supervision of an Attending physician. Serves as a liaison to patients and their families. Completes discharge paperwork, including the W-10 and prescriptions. Reviews discharge instructions with patients and nursing at time of discharge. Coordinates outpatient follow-up.Communicates patient treatment plans to social workers, care coordinators and health care agencies.Promotes the dissemination of the newest clinical evidence in literature to improve patient care.Ensures medical record documentation meets YNHH, State and Federal guidelines, clearly documenting patient diagnosis and medical information required for legal and billing purposes.
  • 7. Participates in 2 educational conferences and attends Yale University School of Medicine Grand Rounds, as time permits. Participates in a level of continuing medical education (CME) activity annually that improves the quality of care provided by the Service. As a healthcare provider, is responsible for reporting adverse or potential adverse events related to patient care. Miscellaneous: -Responds to pages in a timely manner. -Completes all mandatory training requirements related to HIPAA, Emergency Management, patient safety, or as assigned. -Ensures the required licensure and certifications are kept up to date and has copies of current licenses and certificates. -Attends all team meetings. -Dresses and acts professionally at all times. -Adheres to exempt work hour policies

Qualifications

EDUCATION

BS or BA degree and graduation from accredited PA or NP program. Masters level training prefrred. Must be certified by National Commission on the Certification of Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioner or the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

EXPERIENCE

Fiveyears as PA or NP caring for emeergency, urgent care, or family practice required. Two years experience on performing organizational and educational tasks in support of HVC strongly preferred.

LICENSURE

Must hold valid CT medical license, controlled substance registration and Federal DEA certification

SPECIAL SKILLS

Must have excellent clinical, verbal and written communication, interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to work independetnly with minimal surpervision, develop and lead programs, foster a positive work environment. Straong initiative and excellent leadership skills.


Additional Information

APP with a minimum of 5 years clinical experience in an emergency department. Previous management/leadership experience preferred. Would consider internal candidate who has demonstrated experience in leadership responsibility above and beyond clinical assignments. This position combines clinical practice and leadership. Must be fully licensed and credentialed PA or APRN (FNP). Responsibilities span the 3 YNHH ED sites.
