The Madison Center for Civic Engagement at James Madison University, housed in the Office of the President, invites applications for a staff member to lead and coordinate the Center's dialogue and deliberation programming, to begin July 2024 for a one-year term. The Madison Center, a non-partisan, high-profile administrative entity, is hiring this position to support our current deliberation efforts, coordinate our campus-wide free speech orientation programming and civic leadership minor programming.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Better Conversations fellow reports to the interim executive director and will primarily lead the Center's dialogue and deliberation efforts.

Specific duties include the following:
* Support and help administrate the center's free speech orientation dialogue and deliberation efforts during the fall and spring semesters.
* Provide supervision for 10-18 undergraduate facilitation fellows who will be moderating deliberative forums during the semester.
* Support the interim associate director, faculty associate, and interim executive director in offering dialogue and deliberation workshops for faculty, staff, and students and as part of the university's Civic Leadership minor.
* Design and execute ongoing dialogue and deliberation programming for students in collaboration with other units and departments.
* Collaborate with the interim executive director on deliberation assessment efforts.
* Help facilitate and provide administrative assistance for the center's faculty fellows in collaborative dialogue program.
* Help develop and review social media plans with the center's staff.
* Provide support for the Madison Center's various speaker series events.
* Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required qualifications:
* BA/BS degree
* Excellent organizational, interpersonal, written and oral communication, and management skills
* Experience facilitating/moderating difficult dialogues in the classroom or in non-classroom settings
* Commitment to nonpartisanship and appreciating differences when representing the Madison Center
* Experience in planning major, higher profile events and in planning student-focused events

Additional Considerations:
* Supervision experience
* Experience in moderator/facilitator training
* Experience in assessment or research in dialogue and deliberation outcomes



Conditions of Employment:

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check.

This is a part-time wage position working up to an average of 29 hours per week over the course of a calendar year with no benefits.
