Wunderlich-Malec Engineering (WM) has an Associate Electrical Engineer - Power position open. This person will be involved with the design, implementation, system analysis, and commissioning of high, medium, and low-voltage systems used by Industrial and Utility power generation, transmission, and distribution markets under the direction of a Senior Electrical Engineer.

Project Management Responsibilities: provide the support of projects under the guidance of a more senior engineer. Assist with individual work coordination of responsibilities among several project demands. Travel to and some work at remote locations is a component of the project tasks including relating directly to clients at their facilities. Client relationship management by status updates, scope clarification, or work planning both verbal and written (in English) is key to success. Domestic and international travel is required.

Engineering Responsibilities: engineering of the design, development, and implementation including software, hardware, and systems design integration of the various components on any given project under the guidance of a senior engineer.

  • Work on the design of one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, control panels, and approval of manufacturing equipment drawings and the implementation of these designs.
  • Implement the specialty software, power calculations, system analysis, and development of relay protection and control settings.
  • Learn and apply NEC, IEEE, NFPA, NERC, and other regulations and standards in the provided designs and installations.
  • Work on the detailed design for low, medium, and high voltage distribution systems including physical routing of circuits, installation details, conduit layout, and electrical room design. The work includes AutoCAD drafting of those designs.
  • Work on circuit design, operational sequences, installation support, start-up support, and on-site power generation and microgrids for private and utility customers. The successful candidate should have an aptitude and willingness to learn how subsystems in a power-generating facility interact including mechanical, process (steam/water), and electrical.
  • Provide control enclosure manufacturing support and designs such as station electrical service, lighting, cable-tray, AC load center, DC load centers, battery sizing, and other facility design requirements. The work includes the AutoCAD drafting of these designs.
  • Work on quality & project plans, process control sequence of operations, standard practices and procedures, scope of supply, requests for information, customer correspondence, and code commenting
  • Provide project documentation: task/periodic status reporting, percent complete estimating, production and assembly of required project manuals, organization and maintenance of current network-based project files, phone transcripts, meeting minutes, I/O lists, preparing purchase orders, specifying instrumentation, preparing price quotes, etc.
  • Occasionally work on programming of protection relays and other equipment.
  • Provide site investigation or construction support efforts which includes physically sketching equipment layouts, taking photographs, documenting circuit connections, documenting breaker setpoints, measuring equipment, asking client personnel questions, troubleshooting equipment, and performing other on-site tasks. Capability to work alone at a client site along with client personnel and remotely located WM or client personnel is required.
  • Use AutoCAD, ETAP, and other software tools for the design of hardware and other equipment solutions.
  • Learning and complying with electrical safety requirements on active construction sites and at active operating power plants that have steam, high voltage electrical, and other hazards.

Minimum Requirements:

  1. Education -BSEE is required.
  2. Experience - 0-5 years of Electrical Engineering hands-on experience in the power utility industry is preferred. New college graduates would be welcomed and encouraged to apply.
  3. Skills - Some knowledge of 480V and medium voltage power systems is required.
  4. Software Tools - No pre-existing software tool experience is required. Willingness to learn software such as SKM Powertools, ETAP, ASPEN, EasyPower, etc. is required along with installing, using, and maintaining MS Windows and vendor-specific software in a business environment.
  5. Background - US citizenship plus capability and willingness to meet strenuous background check requirements of Federal, port, and critical energy infrastructure facilities is required.

Physical Demands of Position: Seeing, color perception, hearing, listening, clear speech, dexterity in hands, driving, the ability to travel distances, lifting, climbing, and ability to mount and dismount equipment, as well as, pushing, and pulling. Willingness to understand and comply with health and safety corporate policies of WM's customers is required. Capability to wear and use protective gear such as arc-flash protective suit, face shield, hard hat, safety boots, etc. with long days is required.

Working Conditions: Travel varying between 20% - 30% of a normal work year is expected, including multi-week stays as needed. Conditions include standard office environment, on-site office environment, diverse industrial, power generating plants, switchyards, indoor & outdoor power utility environments, frequent PC and specialty equipment usage, fax machines, copy machines, phones, and trailer environment with constant people interactions.
